The real answer to this problem is to have proper facilities for carrying multiple bikes on trains, i.e. a dedicated carriage (not necessarily all of them but a reasonable number). The combination of bicycle and train for getting about is just so perfect but it is a nightmare in this country, although it didn't used to be when we had guards' vans. In this day and age when we're supposed to be discouraging car usage and encouraging cycling and public transport the current set up is just wrong. Other countries can do it so why can't we?
