Predatory willow trees?

Post by nirakaro »

T'other day in the early hours, a man on Radio 4 told me that old willow trees wander about at night looking for human prey
(https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b0b9249m, 20:40). He didn't say what they do with such prey. Is this true??
I can't say I'm unduly alarmed, but if this is happening, shouldn't the government be taking steps to protect us, or at least warn us about this hazard?

Not heard that one before.
I know other trees can be a problem, especially Taxus. I have often heard, whilst staggering home at night, people shout out “yew should be arrested” and church yards are often locked up.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Don't know about the wandering willow - why would I, as I'm tucked up safely in bed with my mug of cocoa and a good book, by ten o'clock... But what a great little series! I missed that somehow, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks for the warning, it's worth being aware of risks like this. There are other carnivorous plants in the UK but I haven't heard of them taking anything larger than a sheep.
Everyone's ghast should get a good flabbering now and then.

I guess if some bloke came along and turned your brother into a cricket bat, you might nurse a grudge against humanity in general.

This one's on the prowl on the Somerset levels. Usually seen hunting beside the M5. The willow man.

Are you sure that's not "pollarded" or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Willow trees have been hunting prey for years. They consume smaller trees and bushes. First they deny light to inhibit photo-synthesis, and when the shaded tree withers ,dies and decays the willow feeds fungi which consume the dead wood .I was funded by Gray Nicholls to research the topic for MSc in Arboreal Studies when at Sherwood University .This was my root into a new career.

You're now bending the truth and turning the whole thread into a basket case!
