The CPS is very keen on independent evidence and fair enough. The only problem is that at least 90% of the general public don't want 'to get involved.' And not surprising. If they survive months of witness harassment and get as far as court, there will probably be at least two adjournments where they will turn up and nobody will let them know what is going on. There loss of earnings will be scrutinised as though they are international fraudsters and eventually they may get to give evidence. Although they will see themselves as 'independent' (and see my opening sentence) they are prosecution witnesses and perhaps pretty compelling so the adversarial nature of the proceedings means that a toffee-nosed twit with a plum in his mouth in fancy dress will treat them as though they are liars. So of the original <10% who may 'get involved' those who will be public-spirited a second time is <10% of that 10% - virtually nobody - the biggest miscarriage of justice of all. IMO.
