Cheaper camping in Netherlands

Camping, even mini camping seems really expensive in the Netherlands. Plus you then have tourist tax and sometimes environment tax. Am I searching the wrong places or is it just more expensive due to population density, higher demand?? Thanks for any pointers especially headed from IJMuiden ferry towards France along the coastline.

I had never considered camping fees to be excessive in NL generally, the exception being the coastal area where tourism is an important industry, resulting in crowding, high demand and higher costs.Try researching prices on an inland route south.
Of course you may have a particular interest in the coastal route in which case you will just have to compete with the masses and pay the costs !

An idea of what is "really expensive" might help.

Coastal route. 24 euros for two people, which we feel is expensive when we arrive late, leave early! May have to head inland more. Tax is high at 1.10 euros each plus some places an additional environment tax of 1 euro per person.

£20, its not too bad, and its your choice to be in and out quick, you could be there. Have you considered Vrienden Oop de Fiets, you will get a proper bed and a Breakfast of Kings, for €50.

We will be travelling along there end July and would pay that. Will you be booking in advance, or will you chance just turning up at campsites, there look to be a lot of campsites along the coast.

Some campsites in some places are really expensive and are not places I like to stay f(or other reasons) e.g.Groede which is more of a beach resort for static caravans/chalets than what cyclists would call "camping". They had a minuscule area "for tents" - "if you can find room come back with a 2nd mortgage". But it's a resort where most people will be spending their entire holiday and they want the site food shop, restaurant, bar, etc.

Focus on "mini-camping" which is cheap and amazing. Proprietors are amazingly kind, will go to surprising lengths to make you comfortable e.g. at one mini-camping I arrived (out-of-blue) proprietor showed me places I could pitch (my choice) then 2 mins later reappeared with a garden chair from his own private garden (I politely thanked him without pointing out my Helinox); next minute he appeared with a garden table from his own private garden, etc.. At another mini-camping I got a good place and later owner came by asking if I minded if he put a caravan 20 m from me (and of course I said it was fine and he and new arrival were very grateful with loads of thanks).

My understanding (others could give the real situation) is that "mini-camping" is where people with good sized gardens or farms open small campsites. In my experience they are small owner operated. Sometimes when you arrive there is nobody around (as they'll be at work or sorting their livestock). One mini-camping site I arrived (no booking) and sign in house that the owner was away on holiday back in 2 weeks, but toilets/shower block was open so I just pitched my tent and early evening a friend of owner arrived to collect very little money.

I've ended my tours in NL (through France where I mostly use Municipal sites, Belgium & Germany then into and around NL and site costs have never made me think, it's just around what I'd expect. Resort type places (e.g. Groede and a couple of others) were ludicrously expensive but they are the exception.

Also consider these guys:

https://www.natuurkampeerterreinen.nl/?lang=en

Not hugely cheap and you need to become a member for the year but the sites are delightful and much more for campers rather than holidaymakers.

There are also ‘pole camps’ which I believe are free. Sort of official wild camping. However, I believe they are all currently closed?

I don’t think it’s that expensive. You should see the prices of the campsites around Lake Constance!

Agree Mini camping is excellent. The farmer / site owner of this place even tried to sort out my creaking bottom bracket between milking his cows :D..apologies cant resist a pic.

Guess I have been spoiled with France usually head for municipals. Had some great sites at great prices.

Followed advice and routed away from the coast on our return leg and much better value camping. Some with cyclist rates.

Thanks forum
