Bike Box Transport

Post by schneewehe »

Hello,
As I come from abroad to do LEJOG this May, I'm having some issues with the bike box transfer. I will fly in to Heathrow and from there I want to send my empty bike box to Wick airport. Is that possible in any case? Two special things to know: 1. I will arrive in Heathrow in the evening snd will take the night train to Penzance, so I will not stay kn London for a night. 2. I will fly out from Wick on Sunday afternoon, so I do not plan to book a hotel there and probably all bike shops are closed. I would be very thankful for any device how to arrange that or maybe someone has another idea.
Kind regards
Andrea

I assume you know that Wick Airport is only just re-opening and there is only one flight out of there to Aberdeen? The aircraft is only a small turboprop, it'd be worth checking that it can even hold a bike box!

And when you say "bike box", are you travelling in with a proper box or just using a cardboard one? A cardboard one would give you considerably more leeway in just taking the bike out if it at Heathrow and binning the box then getting something new at Wick. Obviously if you're travelling with your own proper box then that's far more expensive to manage in terms of transporting it the length of the country and storing it safely until you finish your ride.

If the worst happens and you can't complete the ride for any reason, you're also left with trying to sort out getting the box back to you...

Dosent a bike shop in Wick offer a bike boxing and posting service. I've heard it mentioned before.
This may be the one or there may be others if your googling skills are up to it.

Wick Airport exists and there's someone there, even if there are no flights.
If you want to send a box etc to Wick, there must be loadsa places to send it to.
As for flying from Wick, you really need to speak personally to Far North Aviation.

Telephone/email them and ask.

My experience of them - albeit a dozen years ago - they were brilliant. :D

Booking flyght from Wick with bicycle as very easy. Thanks for all the links, unfortunately none of them offers a bike box transport from London Heathrow to Wick.

Maybe the best solution ist to send an empty bike box via sendbike to an hotel in Wick and stay there for the last night. So I have to travel from Wick to JOG and back on the very last day and than after dismantling and storing the bike getting directly to the airport.
