...753 team Raleigh untouched since it was built.
That was my thinking behind the pic of Joop Zoetemelk's bike, although that had been well-ridden (in both senses.)

Once upon a time, the Campag groupset pretty much defined cycling perfection but Japanese R&D brought technical improvements like the freehub and marketing changes like making the latest thing obsolete before it was in the shops.
I think campy groupset look classic right down to velioce much more so than Shimano apart from Shimano ultegra 6500. However I don't like campy carbon chainsets!😭😭

Campagnolo can, on occasions, be classic. Calling it Campag or, even worse, "Campy" immediately removes any hint of classic-ness. And "Campy Record" sounds more like you're referring to a Katy Perry single than a groupset.

For something to be classic, it also has to be classy. Campagnolo sounds classy. Campy does not.

Despite the comment abut my age above it still doesn't make me an old (as in been at it for ages) cyclist. There are many riders who have been at it for 60 years plus. I was trying to gently hint that just because a newbie sees something as old/classic it doesn't make it so.
But then I could not abide that London "Classic" race name. It can't be. Bloody well near new,in the same way as people calling the Strada Bianca a "classic" race. In hundred years yes.

We need a different word. You can be an old person but an inexperienced cyclist. Equally you can be a young person but have a lot of cycling experience.

All from the late 1940s to 1960 era.
Lovely bikes -- I take it these are original holdsworth bikes.

I thought that "Campag" as a word came from the days of classified ads in the printed media when charging was by the line. It obviously makes no difference with charging by the word except there was pressure, real or implied to keep ads brief. Campag Q/R S/S f/wheel .... etc

Many thanks for the kind words.
All the bikes shown have been fully refurbished by me from the original frames. See photos in same order as finished bikes. It's been my hobby for some years now but with failing eyesight and shaky hands now I'm almost eighty it's time to stop.
I feel that I've done my bit for our heritage. All these bikes will live a lot longer now, in fact the "HILL SPECIAL" was purchased by the Hill family to keep and remind them of their heritage. The Bates and Sirocco were bought by a collector and the Tornado does get ridden occasionally. I still own the red Cyclone and ride it on sunny days

The HILL SPECIAL was the last one I built. It was done to the same design as the original chrome frames were back in the 1940s/1950s, just embellished a little. If the original frame had been better I would have had it fully chromed, as original, but it was pitted under the primer. It really shows that although seventy odd years have passed, the original design can still be admired and on chrome it would be stunning. If that isn't a "classic" then nothing is.
Regards...

How about a Rayleigh 753 Dynaflite?
How many were built, they look very nice, from the brochure I have.

Nice bike but
You wouldn't want to be making that in any significant numbers -- very limited market.

I love my Arkose R2 cos it does what I want it to do and was great value for money but it looks like nothing. I think anything with carbon forks looks terrible.
