Peanut butter-related query

Post by simonineaston »

I know how fond some cyclists can be of peanut butter - both crunchy & smooth! Ah the joys of the peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich... I use the stuff in large quantites and so buy it in kilo tubs. Often the solids have seperated from the oil, requiring vigorous, lengthy and tiring mixing. Do you, dear reader, recognise this issue and have you any tips relating to making the job easier?

Don't buy or eat peanut butter?

Not suffered the separation issues so not had the need to stir but then whilst I love the stuff (crunchy only) I rarely eat it as cycling is when I really need the energy and food-wise I carry only a couple of emergency meals!

But also I only purchase single pot sized quantities (though once purchased/opened they don't last long).

I luxuriate in the oiliness when the tub is first opened and then mix as I go. When reaching the end of the tub, I mix in a little walnut oil from a bottle to liven it up again.

It is reassuring to see that we haven't needed to discuss the commercial answer to the separation problem - palm oil (or the addition of sugar). While such products do adorn the shelves of local convenience stores, they don't pass the lips of true peanut butter aficionados. Added salt I believe is an uncontroversial personal choice.

Final point: AFAIK, most peanuts come from China and some people recommend buying only organic peanut butter and even then with caution. After all, the batteries for those pollution-free electric cars do need to get their cobalt from somewhere....

PS If anyone has any further information about the source of peanuts I would be pleased to hear about it.

I have separation anxiety with peanut butter, I get withdrawal symptoms if I can't find any. I rediscover that Tesco's budget PNB is best every time it goes out of stock, and I have to buy a premium brand instead.

+ 1??. I have to admit to being an addict as a Canadian child and English teenager. But withdrew for a full 31 years, one look at the terrible fat content, being enough. But I bought a jar two weeks ago  . Finished it in 48-72 Hr's, am now on my second :( .

Is there a PBA group? I know I'm fat now I.e. approximately half the waist size of most English people, perhaps a third of locals. NHS only describe me as being "wiry" now on my admissions, which is a bad sign. Could I become fat now, that I've bought my first ever 35mm tyre

I think the oil separation is a healthy sign in the sense that some peanut butter has palm oil added to it to prevent that, and palm oil is heavily saturated and quite unhealthy, so the oil separation is something you're better to live with.

To get around it you can store the jars or tubs upside down, as long as the lid is tight and the oil can't seep out.
