Old Home for Cyclists, Leeds Arms, Sheffield
I recently acquired a photo showing the Leeds Arms, Sheffield Rd, South Anston with a sign on a building to the rear saying 'Old Home for Cyclists'. I'm intrigued, would anyone know anything about it?

Yes the pub is still thriving but the 'Old Home for Cyclists' to the rear appears to have been demolished.

The pic makes me think that the Old Home for Cyclists was losing its trade to the nearby Leeds Arms boozer. NB Although this is Sheffield, there's no sign of the eponymous bike stands.

Intriguing. A local history article says:
So the Lodge Room over the stables had presumably become the venue for the Old Home For Cyclists by the time this photo was taken. Obviously that doesn't help explain who the Cyclists were! Surely there must be a local history forum or Facebook group for the area?1846: The Methodists found a home in the “Lodge Room” over the stables of “The Leeds Arms”, but as this was not very suitable endeavours were made to find other accommodation

I’m assuming this was a sort of hostel, for cyclists passing through, that was in fact an old home, rather than a “home for old cyclists”

South Anston is miles out of Sheffield ,close to Worksop. There were many flop houses for cyclists near canals.

That's interesting mumbojumbo. Do you have any more information about these 'flophouses for cyclists'? Thanks.mumbojumbo wrote: ↑1 May 2022, 7:23pm South Anston is miles out of Sheffield ,close to Worksop. There were many flop houses for cyclists near canals.
