If your speed limit indicator is always spot on ( a very good thing, of course) it must be based partly on reading road signs. The one slight concern I have about that aspect of it is that somebody in our area finds it amusing to reverse speed signs, so they read NSL as you enter a village and 30 or 20 as you leave.PedallingSquares wrote: ↑2 May 2022, 9:16amThis can be turned off whether in-built to the cars system or on a standalone Satnav.Tangled Metal wrote: ↑1 May 2022, 1:22pm Is it beeping because you're over the speed limit approaching a fixed speed camera or does it simply beep approaching the camera even if you're below the limit? Former you do need it because it beeped, latter you may or may not need it depending on whether you speed or not, if you follow me. I suspect you're right and mostly don't speed so knowing about cameras isn't necessary.
Then again anyone who does speed should not be helped to avoid a justified fine with such a beep. It's tantamount to helping people avoid enforcement for their motoring offences. Knowledge of where speed cameras are is irrelevant to someone obeying the speed limits.
In France for eg it's illegal to have a warning for speed cameras active. We were routinely checked at Mont Blanc tunnel a couple of years ago and they specifically ask to check our Satnav. He looked a bit confused when I told him we didn't have/use one!

Our new car has it all built in of course.
I believe, and could be wrong.that our speed limit indicator works on a combination of data and the front camera. The limit changes exactly when we pass a sign whether it be static or temporary. It has never been wrong in the 18 months I've owned the car.

Ours doesn't have a camera to read speed limit roundels but manages detect them anway,I've no idea how,it's a mystery to me that's why I found it so remarkable.

Whatever system you use, the only worthwhile measure of effectiveness is drivers - or autonomous vehicles - not exceeding an appropriate speed. Missing or vandalised signs may be misinterpreted etc and the main safeguard is that whoever or whatever is I/C of the vehicle drives in accordance with the conditions, whatever the signs appear to indicate. Currently, duff signage is just one more loophole to be exploited by those wanting do as they like.

What I find most irritating with speed signage is the lack of it,many times I'm asking myself what's the speed limit here?thirdcrank wrote: ↑3 May 2022, 7:37am Whatever system you use, the only worthwhile measure of effectiveness is drivers - or autonomous vehicles - not exceeding an appropriate speed. There's a definite lack of repeat roundels on most roads I drive on(Staffordshire area being an exception),and that's not counting the unreadable ones(including other road signage)overgrown with roadside foliage or not cleaned with a green slime covering,I've also seen unreadable signage that seems to have been bleached almost white by the sun,and last week I saw one speed roundel that the wayside foliage had scraped off any numbers present.

It’s noticeable round these parts how road signage has suffered since lockdown. I think time/money spent by the authorities has been cut as there are many more signs obscured by vegetation or badly faded and road markings in particular are dangerously absent in many locations.reohn2 wrote: ↑3 May 2022, 7:58amWhat I find most irritating with speed signage is the lack of it,many times I'm asking myself what's the speed limit here?thirdcrank wrote: ↑3 May 2022, 7:37am Whatever system you use, the only worthwhile measure of effectiveness is drivers - or autonomous vehicles - not exceeding an appropriate speed. IME it isn't since lockdown/Covid costs stealing the LA's income, but has been going on for years round these parts, along with some very poor road surfaces and very shoddy repairs that either don't last very long and or are rough and bumpy as to be almost as bad as the surface they were supposed to repair!peetee wrote: ↑3 May 2022, 8:30am It’s noticeable round these parts how road signage has suffered since lockdown.
