So - remind me... why
do we sell cars that'll do over double the so-called speed-limit? (see
here)

They could take him on racetrack..... scare the bejabers out of him! That could cure hiim. Also crush his car and ban him would be a good idea

The speed is probably irrelevant. They are selling a heftily priced car. Speed is part of the marketing. So why not a Morris Minor or CV6?
For some guys and girls to impress a potential mate a flash car is a necessary accessory. Also at legal speeds the supercars are rumbling along on cruise and not straining.
I was in the cycle shop yesterday and eyed up fast cycle candy. None of us are immune.

I suppose its for when people are driving in areas where there are few rules and fewer people eg deserts ,ice-sheets ,salt-lakes ,Siberia, Greenland and so on.

Hi,
I owned five .............545cc twin cyclinder water cooled pickups and vans..........40 mpg around town 55 + on a run, when diesels struggled to do 40 mpg.
Its 32 bhp worked very well, could hit 70 no problem.

Because we're an idiotic nation that panders to such foolishness?

It's got nothing to do with nationality. People speed in HGVs, trucks, cars, motorbikes all over the world. About 15 years ago we were in Auckland, NZ. It was disconcerting driving on the ring road (l believe the only bit of 3-lane road anywhere in NZ at the time) where most drivers were disregarding the speed limit, including in roadworks restricted speed limit zones.
By that time sticking to speed limits was far more prevalent in the UK - especially where roadworks were taking place - Auckland seemed particularly manic in comparison. I imagine the sainted Jacinta has calmed things down....

I'm not a petrolhead but the ability of a car to be driven above an arbitrary safe speed doesn't make it unsafe. It's always the human element. Is this not a bit like newspapers saying a car hit a cyclist? We should be like cyclist hits a pedestrian in such rags.
I'll put it in what feels a better phrasing.
Why do we let such motorists drive at over double the speed limit? Shouldn't we be stopping them from getting behind the wheel ever?!

PS the stopping ability of hyper cars is better than a Ford fiesta. If driven in the safe driving limits a fast car has the potential to be safer than a slower one of driven safely.

Well it is really,as the offence was in the UK,it's a UK problem, cars could be restricted to say 10mph over the limit, anyone found to be derestricting them could have their licence revoked for say five years and need to take a retest.
But we firstly need an effective police force and a government with the spherics to pass such legislation.
PS,my granddaughter was killed by an illegally derestricted motorcyclist who's motorcycle should have been restricted to 33bhp but his own father removed the restriction device which allowed full 80bhp,his son was also killed.

I'm more interested in whether we should limit them technologically when used on public roads.
