Cycle Path? Creek Road Deptford

Post by carlislemike »

Why oh why is this seemingly fully installed Cycle Path route not open and still strewn with plastic barriers? The route has been in place for over two years. The main road carriageway was reduced in width by removal of the bus lane so making the main road route less safe for cycling! There are no ongoing road or other works taking place. It’s a costly, unsightly and unsafe waste of space. Is it TfL or Greenwich who are to blame? If it’s the latter then it’s obviously their usual incompetence on a parallel to not fixing the Greenwich Foot Tunnel lifts after many years of inadequate repairs!

And yes, I do know that yesterday and today that part of the road will be closed due to a major fire. Still leaves the original question open!

Ask TfL or Greenwich? Give me a map link and I'll ask them on twitter. Leave the grumbling out, at least at first.

Blocked off because "unsafe to join and leave it at either end"!?! Now, call me naive, but at the very least, temporary lights could be used at each end until the proper junctions are finished.

Also, surely there should be many intermediate junctions, for cyclists coming to/from buildings along the route if not side roads, so I don't understand this excuse at all. It seems utterly implausible.

They'd never treat motorists like this...

Thank you all. It shows how low down in the pecking order are cyclists! Several personal observations:- the junction of the Cycle Lane/Path at Norway Street and Norman Road were installed(and I think for a short period worked), the whole junction was gradually blocked off and finally sectioned off for access to what is a perfectly safe route despite the resurfacing supposedly needed on the bridge. The junction at the western end, Deptford Church Street doesn’t yet have lights; or if it did, I didn’t spot them as you have to physically cross the road because of the non continuity of the Cycle Lane. Yes, there’s a pavement but no ramp!

As for access and egress, surely Cyclists and Pedestrians take those decisions on a daily basis elsewhere, with or without traffic lights being installed? We take sensible precautions and in 999/1000 (guessing) we get it right. Why be a 100% nanny state?

I can’t understand the RBG re finances. They appear to be in place. Motor Traffic is gradually returning to a level seen pre Pandemic so why the delay?

“Oh sorry, we need to do it just in time for the summer tourist season to be further fouled up!”

RBG is the site of some of the most expensive riverside developments so they must have raised millions for the Council via permits etc and will continue to pay millions even if only through ongoing Council Tax! Financial arguments are excuses not reasonable answers.Where did and still does the money go?

Going back to my initial query, RBG are also responsible for the Foot Tunnels under the Thames. They are responsible for the lifts and other infrastructure but have failed in recent years, both pre and post Pandemic to ensure their repair and updating. If you look at commercial developments along the Thames in both Greenwich and Lewisham, they have proceeded and been completed despite! Mind you RBG Engineering is probably seeking that last highly specialised grommet to finalise their works but tracking it in a a remote German Baltic port is proving difficult.

Pedestrians and cyclists are at the top of the new road hierarchy in name only. In Greenwich, the Council, Developers, Motor Transport etc have inverted that hierarchy and we are left with a great Cycle Lane being mothballed.

Anyway, maybe someone with knowledge of the machinations of the Council, their Finance and their Engineering Departments can resolve this.

They are doing no better the east side of Angerstein Roundabout.

Not surprised they shut that one down. You need 360deg vision, and lightning fast reactions to navigate that safely.

In fairness I don’t think it’s just cycle lanes the council planners get wrong. It’s far wider than that.

I rode the creek road way the day of the fire. Never occurred to me to even try and use anything other than the main carriageway. Rode it for 15 years now, never had a problem with it.
