Link threads without context?

I was wondering what you think and do with threads started around a link without any context?

My first reaction is to leave then go back later when there's enough replies to follow what the link was about. Then I might take a look at the link. It's partly that I might be travelling on the train with patchy connection and partly the dislike of clickbait feel to such posts.

What's your view/ response to such threads?

If they look interesting I follow the link.

If they don't I don't.

Roughly the same as for other threads.

I'll often context-click a link in order to choose the option to open in a new tab, which gives me some extra control.

Good point. On my desktop and laptop Macs I use tabbed browsing extensively. On the 'phone not at all.

But this forum's software is very well behaved so it's easy to get back to where I was anyway. Some other forums make this much harder.

Ignore. If it's not worth the opening poster discussing it, it's usually not worth reading.

Doubly so if it's a tracking link starting google, bit.ly or similar.

Yup.

It's just poor "netiquette". Would you send a link to a work colleague without some context in the email?

In a similar vein, if someone saves a second or two by using unnecessary acronyms/initialisms that I don't immediately understand then I'll assume it's not worth reading and move on.

I have that feeling it's laziness on the OP to not give context. However, my biggest issue is I'm often reading the forum on a train journey without WiFi or good mobile data connection. I want to know that the wait for the link is worth it.

Having said that I don't hold a grudge so I'll revisit once I see it's had a few further posts that I can use to work out the content of the link from. Often you get someone quoting from the link which is good information that I think the OP should have put in his opening post.

It's funny that in this modern era of so many versions of human etiquette there's still ppl who feel feel strongly about the particular form known as netiquette! Good to have standards.

Yet people complain if you double them!

I agree - hats off to both the developers and the folks who maintain it locally. Thank-you!
A dependable, in a world of increasing uncertainty.

Does that mean less is more?

I don't know, and the more I ask, the less I know.

Might be a good idea. Most people on forums look at the title,no of views.Forums are sometimes cliques with people supporting threads they like (especially political left/right.A title thread like Democrats/Republicans/Abortion or something like Cryptocurrency will always get lots of posts.

Netiquette may be the least important etiquette, but we shouldn't neglect it! ; -)

Ignore them. If the OP can’t be bothered to give their view on whatever they’ve linked, why should anyone else?
