Edge 830 Navigation- help please!

Post by Racingt »

Dear all,
When I load a route and try to follow it, my Edge 830 often gives the following message:-

Route Calculation Error - Maps do not have routable roads in this area.

This happens all the time - on ordinary roads. The navigation function then effectively gives up.

How do I make this Edge 830 work for me? Thanks in advance.

Where are you and what maps do you have loaded?

Has it ever worked properly?

Thanks

Jonathan, good point, I'm using this in the UK, no I've never had the navigation working. Maps are Garmin standard issue.

Thanks Jonathan, I'm updating the maps now. Having said that the road I was riding on was hundreds of years old, so I expect it was on the original maps.
I'll try this, then purchase the SD card of Europe Cycling Routes. 3-4 weeks lead time though. Don't know what to do if that doesn't work. Maybe a factory reset?

From what you're describing I'd include a factory reset well up the list.

And I'd ask Garmin support:

Plotting a route only really works properly if both devices have the same info (routing info - bridges, road classification etc) so for example if the GPS doesn't have that same snickleway as on the plotting site then the GPS tends to have a hissy fit and give errors.
I had a 'plotting error' once that was because my GPS using recent OSM maps knew a bridge no longer existed, the route I had loaded and tried to navigate was created when the bridge existed! (somewhere in Normandy, so I'd have been stuffed on (failed) CSE French and no paper backup.
A corrupt GPX file can have the same result, so it's always worth downloading again, just in case.

Spoke to Garmin support - they suggested as a first step, to create a route in Garmin Connect & see if that worked. It's going to be a day or two till I can check that fully.
Obviously not a practical way forward, because I don't want to create every route I ride.
I'll get back to them on the results of the GarminConnect created route before a factory reset.

Also ordered the SD card with cycling maps on - just in case.
So, no quick solution yet.

Something similar to that was next on my list: test with a route generated within the device and see if the same problem occurs as with an imported route. Testing with Garmin Connect is sort of in-between.

This doesn't affect how you're going to use it in anger, its's just for diagnosis of the fault.

Factory reset done, will test the Garmin Connect route tomorrow. And Garmins European maps arrived on an SD card, which they sold me, for a device without an SD slot.
I thought they would have checked that…

As mentioned above possibly down to the maps being used.
I use Openstreet maps and have done for a few years now. (Edge 810).
With the added bonus of generally being up to date and free - but donations appreciated.
I downloaded the relevant map from this website and reasonably easy to do :-
http://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/ ... tries.html

Page down to "Garmin GPS-device: (0.8 GB)"
Download the zip file and install in the "new file" folder. I do it on a spare SD card just in case I get it wrong.
May have to "enable" the map on the Garmin.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

Called Garmin support a second time after my factory reset, and finding i couldn't pair with my phone.
We deleted the .xml file, reinstalled, also cleared much of the memory.
Creating a course on the device still gave the same error message. And I still couldn't pair with the phone.
Strangely my nearest POI's were 420km away in North Rhineland.
Garmin UK kindly volunteered to replace the unit under their two year warranty.
I thought it was me being incompetent, but a faulty device instead.
Hope the next one works well, I have invested a fair chunk in Garmin over the years, mounts, battery packs etc. Fingers crossed!

Garmin were as good as their word and a replacement head unit was shipped.
Sadly, it suffers from the same problems:-
'Routable roads not found in this area' - even when I'm on an 'A' road.

Nearest POI's are in North Rhineland - 258 miles away, when I search on my current location, or a saved location.

Local city (Cambridge) is not recognised, even when its 8 miles away.

For comparison, I fired up my old Edge 800, did the same tests, and it worked perfectly.

Before I engage Garmin Support in another 1 1/2 hours of Livechat - has anyone got any helpful suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

It's a conflict between the routing settings and the basemap.

https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=7 ... mP0IF1usI9

Do a factory reset on the device and make sure when it's being set up that it's set to use British OS grid ref, and all the routing options match.

If its set to some other grid setting it'll think it's miles away.
