Ebay Bidding 20% VAT Will Apply.....Erk.......!?

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

Hi,
Anyone else notice the "20% vat will apply" when you bid on an item from a private seller residing in the UK?
Is it a glitch?

Nothing about VAT on my eBay.
Sometimes a VPN can cause problems on certain sites.

Rings a bell, in that I 'won' an auction from a seller who also used a vpn and the invoice applied vat. When I pointed that out the seller undertook to send another invoice without the vat, but in the end, did not. The transaction was therefore not completed.
It was unclear where the seller was geographically located, which one might argue is one of the points of a vpn...

Another glorious benefit from the Brexit table, all bids outside of the UK will incur av twenty percent hit.

UK and EU VAT Requirements - what you need to do
In 2021, a number of significant changes were made to the rules for collection of VAT on items imported into the UK and EU, as well as certain shipments within the EU and within the UK.
The changes took effect from 1 January 2021 in the UK, and from 1 July 2021 in the EU.

If you are registered for EU or UK VAT, you should take the following actions:

Provide VAT rates: when listing on any EU or UK site, always provide the gross price and the VAT rate you used to calculate the gross price. Where eBay has to collect VAT on your sales to EU or UK buyers, eBay will add it to your listing price net of your indicated VAT rate. This ensures that we can always display the correct VAT-inclusive price to EU or UK buyers and that eBay doesn't collect VAT on an already-VAT inclusive price, which would make your listing uncompetitive. If you did not apply VAT, you can leave this field empty. Where eBay has to collect VAT, we will add this on top of your listing price.

Not sure if this helps or adds to the confusion
