The space race between the two super powers was serious stuff and to America's credit they televised most of their launches. I think this was a very bold thing to do.
Russia suppressed any bad news and I'd guess many pilots lost their lives and we were never told of the failures.

A couple of years ago I was invited to Inmarsats HQ in London to watch the live launch of one of their Global Express satellites on a Russian rocket the design of which dates back to the 1960s!
