chain lube or wax?
chain lube or wax?
Does anyone use UFO Drip chain lube? It’s very expensive (£36 for 180ml) but I’ve read some good reports and reviews about it.

Usual question: what have they measured to define success?

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
If you shop around you can buy two quality 10sp chains for about £36.
How long do reviews claim chains last using this super lube?

I run 11 speed, and it’s not just chain wear that’s a factor, cassette and chainring wear are too. 11 speed cassettes are about £70. 11 speed chains about £25 each.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
TBH I'm highly suspicious of a chain lube costing more than a third the price of a chain and cassette.
If you look after your drivetrain buy cleaning and lubing it regularly, you should get three chains before the cassette is toast,at least that's what I've always got 8,9 and 10sp drivetrains,I've no expedience of 11sp.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
Not for use in Scotland thenIn summary – if you live somewhere warm, or you heat your house including where your bike and lube is stored to 25dg c +, then application is a doddle every time. If things get cooler, then you can have a mild to decent amount of work ahead

I've never really understood that, R2.
The first chain you replace before its sufficiently worn to damage the cassette.
The second chain you do the same.
The third chain...........why not replace that too, before its sufficiently worn to damage the cassette?
This thread viewtopic.php?t=116834&hilit=reverse+we ... e&start=45 shows a cassette I used year after year until the teeth were thin. New chains never slipped, because the loaded face of the teeth hadn't been worn to the "wrong" shape.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
Your experience is different to mine, and I'm not disputing it.Before I began splitting cassettes disgarding the usless to me 11,12 and 13tooth sprockets and starting at a 14t which also meant I could swap out individual sprockets when they looked in a bad shape,if with a fixed cassette a most used sprocket jumped after the third chain(usually a 15 or 17t)the whole cassette had to be junked, this tended to be more likely on the tandems.531colin wrote: ↑5 Jun 2022, 12:00pmI've never really understood that, R2.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
Can I ask what chain lube people do use? I currently use Muc Off dry lube in the summer and either Muc Off or Finish Line wet lube in winter, but I find I do end up with a dirty drive train, even with the dry lube and if I accidentally get caught in the rain, it washes off straight away. Looking for a cleaner drive train, not that bothered about saving watts, but would also like something that doesn’t wash off that much.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
Finish line wet for me, all year.
Applied in really, really small amounts......quickly run the nozzle along the top and bottom chain run, so the rollers have a barely-visible dot of oil on them. And leave it for a bit before riding, so the oil runs in a bit, its not left on the surface to get blathered all over the cogs.....obviously, you can't run dry and then use such a tiny amount, so I apply a bit of oil before the chain starts "zizz-ing".

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
I use My own mixture of white spirit and chainsaw oil. 4:1. Dribble it on inside while turning pedals back. Leave for a minute and wipe it all off with paper towel.
My theory is the spirit cleans any muck off and hopefully leaves a trace of sticky chain oil to lubricate. Used this regime for over three years now and seems to work.

Re: UFO Drip chain lube
He’s a bloke in Australia who has built a test rig and regime to independently test chains and lubes. Not sure how he makes his money. He does run an online shop which sells some of the products that he’s tested, which is presumably how he makes some money, but I’m not sure if this is his main source of income.
I’ve only recently found out about him via Simon Willis’s Always Another Adventre YouTube channel.
