For me, it's the manufacturer's initials in a font similar to Old English and reads either BS&S* or JS&S*, the &S standing for "and son(s)". It's not a true hallmark but made to look like one to make the punters think the thing has been through an assay office and is real silver, gold, platinum or whatever.

The "S with a line through it" is simply a capital or lower-case S: OE fonts

I must say, that the first "letter" resembles a B rather than a J

We were in Tavistock this morning - bank and dropping stuff off at a charity shop - but didn't have time to pop into a jeweller's shop.
