Garmin Edge 530

I am looking to upgrade my trusty Garmin Edge 130, to buy a 530 model. The main reason for the upgrade, is to be able to use the Garmin like a car satnav - i.e. for it to give me directions when out and about on a cycle ride. I have downloaded some GPX files for routes - does anyone know how I would transfer these onto the Garmin 530? Does anyone have any general advice about the Garmin 530?? PS I mostly ride a road bike (as opposed to mountain bike)

If you don't need to change urgently then there are rumours about a number of xx40 models to be released before much longer. All rumours and nothing from Garmin so nobody "knows" which models or when or what features any possible newer models might have (e.g. they might just be more expensive fora few trivial changes or they might not).

Just an aspect you may or may not want to consider?

On my 810 you put the GPX file into the "new files" folder.
The Garmin (by magic) then transfers the route into the "courses" file on the Garmin.
Seems a strange way of working but it does.
Whether the 530 works in the same way, sorry, I don't know.

That's moving map and turn-by-turn instructions?

Thanks

That's how I import routes to my Edge 1000. This approach mounts the device as a mass storage volume and you manage the routes as files. It avoids the need for any particular application software.

And it does seems strange.

The Edge 530 does support mass storage mode... and I'd put money on it doing the magic folder trick but I haven't got one to try... here's the relevant area of the official Garmin support site:

What device would you like the Garmin to talk to?

It has Bluetooth and WiFi.

If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can pair the Garmin to it, and then send the GPX file over Bluetooth. I’ve done this from Garmin Connect, Strava and Ride with GPS. There’s usually a “send to device” option in the menus of the Apps. You can also send it over a wired connection from a PC or laptop, you may be able to use Bluetooth as well, depending on the laptop.

Discussed here with link to a big review (including the solar charging) from DC Rainmaker:

But the solar screen dims the display so not great. Pics from DC Rainmaker make me wonder about the solar (other enhancements std->solar don't seem like a major benefit). And solar cost a fair bit more for limited increase on an already very long battery life.

I have downloaded GPX files onto my laptop. How could I transfer these to the Garmin?

Connect the Garmin to the laptop using a USB cable. That is assuming the Garmin has a USB port. ??
Open the Garmin files and look for the "new files" folder. Transfer the GPX file into the new files folder.
Disconnect the Garmin from the laptop. Start the Garmin and the new route should appear in the "Courses" section. Select the route and it then should work on the Garmin.

*** If for some reason the Garmin doesn't appear on the laptop then look under the "this PC" section of the laptop and it should appear there. ***

Plus you could try Utube for assistance -

Yes, it has a micro USB port.

This is the method that I use. it relies on mounting the Garmin as a mass storage device. It doesn't need any specialised software on the computer.

What operating system is the laptop running?

Does the Garmin appear as a listed device?

if it doesn't please let us know. There's a variety of reasons for it not working first time, including some Garmins' extreme fussiness about USB cables.
