Training

Post by Tiggertoo »

Training for LeJog is getting a little hard around here, and this is why:

The average day time temperature for the next 30 days will be 98 F

And so on, ad infinitum until maybe October.

If it really was 36 degrees, I would be quite cold, which might be a nice alternative to 98.
You'd better get used to Fahrenheit readings, Imperial measurements are coming back after Brits living in Britain slavishly cow-towed to European edicts and gave up on their birthrights. :D :

Yes, they caught it from eating BSE-ridden beef.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I/we were using Centigrade long before we joined the common market and is all I have used.
If someone quotes a Fahrenheit temperature I have no feel for it.
Only because TV weather reporters say that 61F = 16C that it has any correlation to me.

Now I'm a staunch "mile" man although I can reasonably convert kilometres easily, as with any general metric measurement. Anyway our road measurements have always been in Imperial measurements.
Not sure though that people would appreciate rods/chains/furlongs. :?

Does seem a bit strange though asking for 2 metres of 2x4 please.

I'm quite happy with what we have thank you. Leave well alone. :x

That depends on what you mean by "always".

The English statute mile was introduced in 1593, but local variations continued long after that, The Imperial mile was introduced from 1824 to 1826.

I always ask for 6 feet of 2x4 and expect that store man to give me something damn close. Of course I will always have a bit extra .
Miles and feet here but below inches I use cm as those are a nice handy size.
Handily a pair of size 8 wellies are a foot long and across my hand from thumb tip to the widest part is 6". Measuring with parts of the body is dead useful
My younger mates do it all metric but they are newcomers to cycling brought up with trendy telly and magazine coverage and know no better.

Digressing somewhat
But "trendy telly " made me think why are TV screen sizes quoted in diagonal inches but the TV's other dimensions in metric. ?

Fahrenheit is European, Dutch actually.
Now that England is liberated from the Normans, you should switch back to Kelvin.
