Derailleur Pulley Bolt

Post by Gummo »

Sadly, on trying to replace a pulley, the bolt head is stripped. Any tips on how to get it off?

Also, I'll need to buy a new bolt but I'm unsure, while searching online, what will be compatible with my Shimano RD-M663 derailleur.

You may be able to find a reverse thread extractor of the right size. This will cut its way into the hole in a anticlockwise direction until it hits the bottom and will then hopefully unscrew the bolt. Try googling easyout

What are we looking at?
What is the hexagon if it isn't the bolt head?

Normally, there is the bolt head one side of the jockey cage, and the end of the bolt the other side. Its worth putting a drill on the bolt end....normal drilling direction, high force low speed....as the drill bites, it might unscrew the bolt. However, if it starts drilling into the bolt, make sure the drill is small enough so the thread is un-damaged.

1) If you removed the other jockey wheel would the plate spin off. Maybe jam the bolt so it wouldn't turn.

2) I don't know how hard the bolt is but using a drill the same size as the bolt shank (or fractionally larger) , drill down into the remaining head. The head should part from the bolt. This would allow the plate to part leaving the remaining bolt in the plate. The bolt can then be removed with pliers or put the bolt in a vice and turn the plate.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

It foxed me too - maybe something to do with having using the macro function on my phone's camera - something at the far end?

Thanks folks - I've sent for the Screwfix bits. Fingers crossed.

Well, you have got it in your hand, the rest of us are guessing......
which jockey wheel is it? top or bottom?
If its the top one, is the hexagon we are looking at part of the bit which plugs into the mech. in Jonathan's picture?
Can you undo the other jockey wheel bolt and take the cage to bits, as somebody suggested?

If that has broken off where I think then you're going to have to drill a hole for the extractor to work. ??
Have you got the bit that has sheared off. Any chance of a photo?

It's the bolt that's been stripped - the hex is now a circle.

Top one - no.10 on the diagram.

I'm stumped as to how I'd do that since the offending bolt is stuck in the main body.
