I have no claim to MickF's qualifications as an ale conner but my own theory is that a popular pub sells the beer more quickly giving the landlord less opportunity to spoil it, which means the good beer makes the pub more popular.

Yep. :D

The Wetherspoon's issue with short dated stuff is the honest truth. It's obviously still in date and still good, but as they sell mountains of the stuff, short dated isn't an issue for them.

I plan on doing Bridges 18 and 19 either later this week or early next week. I'll be taking the train to Plymouth having done Bridge 33 en route to the station. After setting off from Plymouth station and doing the 20miles, I'll be in Wetherpoon's again before getting the train back to Gunnislake.

Off on the 09:19 this morning after a ride (struggle!) up Gunnislake Hill.
I'll be doing Bridge 18 and 19 then back to the station for the 12:28 back to Gunnislake. I'll do Bridge 33 after getting back, then ride to the Rising Sun. :D

Bridge 19 is a private road (I think) but looking at Google Streetview, it doesn't seem to be gated off.
The path to it is to the right of the big fancy gates.

Ride report later today.

Ride Report.

Took the train to Plymouth and out to Bridge 18 and 19.
Very hard work with the Plymouth hills, I can tell you!!

Route piccy.
18 + 19.jpg
Piccies of Bridge 18 at Ernesettle.
It's a "dead end" as the other end goes into an industrial estate and a Kawasiki building.

Note the distance.
This is the distance to London via Tavistock and Okehampton. Line doesn't exist through Tavistock of course.

Piccies of Bridge 19 at the old Tamerton Foliot Station. The bridge is an access into Warleigh Nature Reserve.

Note the graffiti.

Tamerton Foliot Station, now a private house.

After getting back to Gunnislake station, I went to Bridge 33 ........ last one on the line, and then down to the Rising Sun for three well-earned pints. :D
33.jpg
Note the distance.
This is the distance FROM Callington Station (that closed in the early 1960s)
Distance is the original branch line Bere Alston to Calstock. Bere Alston was on the line from Plymouth to London, and you changed for Calstock/Gunnislake/Callington.
IMG_1396.jpg
Note the curve and the visibility.
There are many of them north of Calstock to Gunnislake, and some of them tighter than this viewed north from 33.
It's a slow train, as the driver has to be very careful.

Ride report but it’s not simple.

Firstly, one of the “bridges” was actually an Under Bridge.
Blame me for not checking the map properly. I’ve re-numbered to bridges now. Secondly, three of the bridges I couldn’t get to.

I took the train to Bere Ferres station and headed south to Bridge 20.
No 1 to No 19 are the Plymouth set, and I am 100% certain that I have done them all, so am positive that No 20 is the first one on the Bere Peninsula.

I couldn’t get to it, as I’m unwilling to open a closed farm gate. This is despite the Google Streetview.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.44944 ... 312!8i6656

What I called Bridge 21 originally ...........(the route south to Bridge 20) ........... but it wasn’t a bridge, but an Under Bridge.

Screenshot of the route yesterday with corrected numbers. Train south, then working my way northwards, and then riding off over the hills back home. Damned hard work. Only 16.5miles of a ride, but 2,125ft of total ascent. That’s nigh-on 130ft per mile.

Bridge 21 and Bridge 22 were easy peasy.

Bridge 23 was across fields of dairy cows. There was no way on Earth that I would walk across with a bike. Dairy cows can be very aggressive to strangers ............. and Bridge 24 seemed impossible to even get to.

Bridge 25 and Bridge 26 were easy peasy.

Bridge 27 was impossible, and I couldn’t even see where it was, even though I was less than 200yds to the north of it.
Screen Shot 2022-07-22 at 06.00.59.png
Bridge 28 was easy.

Bridge 29 had a “private” sign on the lane to it.

Bridge 30 and 31 were easy.

22degC sunshine, and I needed to rest in the shade under trees a couple of times.
Note the “ice warning”

Research is now required for 23 and 24 as well as 27, and maybe be brave and open the gate to Bridge 20 and ignore the Private sign to 29. Next week maybe.
