Need higher gears

Post by Anadyr »

Hi all,

I bought a Giant Escape 3 2021 last year to use as a commuter and am happy with it other than the gears which don't go high enough.

I was looking at changing the cassette to something with 11 or 12 teeth rather than the 14 mine has but found out my bike uses a freewheel cassette.

The plan now is to buy a replacement 700c rear wheel with a cassette hub (I think it's called freehub?)

I've noticed a lot of the 700c rear wheels I've looked at are listed as working with specific gear sets e.g 8-11 speed and am wondering why this is the case?

I'm struggling to find a 700c wheel with free hub and rim style braking that is listed as working with a 7 speed cassette and ideally is tubeless compatible.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can buy a spacer to put a 7 speed cassette on a 8-11 hub.
Sometimes 7 speed shifter would cover an 8 speed cassette,
7 & 8 have the same cog to cog spacing.

You LBS should have something like this...

Thank you, that sounds like it will do the trick!
