Anyone selling a touring bike?

Post by Cyclingkiwis »

Hi there! My partner and I are planning a touring trip from Calais, France to Istanbul, Turkey.

We're currently in Ardingly, West Sussex and are dead keen to buy bikes in the UK and to take the ferry across to France.

Is anyone selling or knows of someone selling one or two touring bikes that we may buy?

We are ideally looking for a medium sized chromoly frame with a nice set of gears, drop handlebars, disk/canti brakes. We have panniers so don't need any extra kit, just the bikes! :)

Would really appreciate any directions or advice on where to go for this, thanks so much!

What sort of price are you looking at paying? If you are prepared to do a bit of work, keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace. All sorts pop up there.

Our budget is roughly 500 pounds per bike :) We're keeping an eye out on FB marketplace and have found a few that look good, thanks for the suggestion!

It would be really useful if you could indicate your height and frame sizes you think you require.

A bike which fits you well is a joy to ride.

I'm about to sell two identical bikes, medium frame size: Specialized Tricross Comps, which have all the fittings for mudguards as well as front and rear panniers. Aluminium main frame with carbon fibre forks and rear triangle; cantilever brakes.

However, I live in West Wales and don't want to post or travel with them, so you being in West Sussex might be a problem, even if you liked them. I'll be putting them in the Bike For Sale forum in about a week's time, after collecting the various spare parts, alternative wheelsets etc. and giving them a full service.

Another place to look is Gumtree.

You will have to wade through oodles of irrelevant and/or rubbish bikes, but certainly round here people occasionally have a clear out and put incredibly good older bikes up at nominal prices, just to get rid of them, so don’t search by price, or even description, because people often have no idea what they are selling!

Gumtree is now owned by eBay. Most Gumtree ads also seem to be in eBay. I don’t think it’s the bargain site it once was IMO. Happy to be proven wrong…

I didn’t know it had fallen into the clutches of eBay.

Still some bargains at the moment. There’s what looks to be a more than half-decent Ridgeback for sale near me currently for £80, for instance. Mostly kids bikes and dross though.

Gumtree UK was owned by eBay. It isn't now.
