Handstands, somersaults, kissing, and attention seeking to the promoters on your shirt, I suppose this no longer happens in football today.

I suppose no cards can be given for invading the press conference for a mass dance and shout/song since match over a ref off to the pub.
Like many found it amusing and joyful.
Tho can't help wondering what the social/media response would have been if a men's team had done this.

You've managed, singlehandedly,to turn a positive thread commending and celebrating the England women's football team being the best in Europe, into an argument over a song you think should be sung at their matches, which you've been corrected on but still insist the crowd should sing the song of your choice.
Thanks :?

Sorry R2.

I have been wondering what a Neil Diamond song has to do with the women's England football team, that's all.

Who's being negative about women's football?
Not me. I'm full of admiration for them. Not that I watched it or followed them, but well done to them.

I'm querying why a Neil Diamond song about sweet Caroline should be an anthem.

Just reviewing my posts on this thread.
It seems I have got my copy and paste incorrectly between two separate (or more?) threads.

The linked Wikipedia article essentially says that it's sung because it's popular. Doesn't really explain how or why it became so.

It gives the history and the rather surprising geography.

I presume that for any song to become a sports anthem it has to have some musical properties such as a simple melody, a chorus, call and response...

So I'd give that article some marks for how...

... and if anyone knows more about why... it's really easy to edit Wikipedia. : - )

I gotta say I probly didn't help by carping about sing-along songs - I apologise! Specially as I really enjoyed the footie game and women's sport in general - I always watch the women's cricket team games here at home and they're great fun - even with the Neil Diamond sing-alongs!!

NATURAL ANKLING wrote: 2 Aug 2022, 11:29am Hi,

I think the women play a better game of football.
But unfortunately bad habits are creeping in or maybe they were always there?
Fouling in football is the norm due to the nature of the game,it's a contact sport and so fouls do happen at whatever level.
The difference is between an accidental foul and an intentional one, further complicated whether a foul is intentional and or dangerous that's why the card system exists.
Men's football is so ugly and boring, so that's why I will never watch it.
I watch the odd match though it's rare for me get further than the first half due to the men's game at top level being so cynical and theatrical.
The women's game was as you expected not to much fouling, could be better.
"Invented by men perfected by women" is is bad as “Kelly is England’s heroine, bra none.”
there is no such thing as better between sex's just different.
So you simply can't promote one over the other.
Fouling in the first 20mins by Germany wasn't dealt with properly by the referee as Al says.
See my reply above on fouling in general.
The invented by men, etc, slogan is a friendly dig at the England men's teams lack of success in the same competition,no more no less.
I'm not familiar with the "bra" slogan as I haven't followed anything after the game's end,so can't comment.

I don't think I've compared the two gender's game.IMO from what I've seen of both games I much prefer the women's game,it's just as skillful and lacks the cynicism of the men's game.
That said I'm no expert on on the game whatsoever just an archair viewer
