My local serves Marston's 61 Deep and it's a very nice pint!

For anybody in or near Burton-on-Trent, Marston's 61 Deep might be as good a beer as any. I'm by no means a beer connoisseur and I've only drunk this one recently when the Lord Nelson in Hoylandswaine started serving it.

Prior to that they served Farmers Blonde from the nearby Bradfield Brewery.

It is possible to be thrown online. I see that although I've got the right pub, the info refers to the Station Hotel in Brighton. When I tried the Marston's Brewery site, the first thing it wanted was my year of birth. Being strict on under-age drinking is one thing ......

Most of our locals stock the Bradfield Beers. The Farmers Blonde is probably their best although many like the Belgian Blue.

I'm drifting away from the thread title. Mrs thirdcrank's former employment with the now defunct Age Concern Training meant she gained friends in Barnsley. They used to have regular get-togethers at the Fountain in Ingbirchworth till it went down the pan. (I see it's been refurbished and relaunched.) They transferred their affections to the Lord Nelson and we husbands were invited at crimbo. More recently, we've been there occasionally for a trip out. Unfortunately, the Rose and Crown in Hoylandswaine didn't re-open after lockdown. They did Farmers as well.

I rode that Coton in the Elms to Swadlincote stretch in my LeJoG, on the way to Hathersage that day. Pleasant.tykeboy2003 wrote: ↑6 Aug 2022, 10:07am A very enjoyable ride with beer and good company.

The company owned by one of the members of the CC I'm with has the Fountain and two other pubs/bars in Penistone. Not been in since it relaunched but they do tend to do good things with the establishments they take on.thirdcrank wrote: ↑6 Aug 2022, 12:55pm I'm drifting away from the thread title. The firm which sent the Fountain on its downward path some years ago seemed to specialise in wrecking nice places. When they took over the Fountain, they also took over the George lll at Penmaenpool and did that no good. Give your clubmate my best wishes. Recently, Penistone seems to have been a bit of a pub graveyard so it would benefit from the attention of somebody who knows what they are doing. There are plenty of problems for pubs at present, without clowns nebbing in.PedallingSquares wrote: ↑6 Aug 2022, 1:21pm

Re: Friday night beer and bikes
Interesting that my thread has been hijacked by people talking about pubs in and around Barnsley, my hometown! I grew up in Bolton on Dearne and used to frequent many pubs in the area, the favourite being the Halfway at Highgate (on the A635) appropriately half way between Barnsley and Doncaster. The pub is sadly no longer there having been demolished 20 or so years ago and replaced with housing. Another of my haunts was the working men's club next door which, happily, is still there.
I still get back to Barnsley, being a supporter of Barnsley FC and last year went in the No 7 in the town centre, the beers were excellent but the pork pies were magnificent.

Re: Friday night beer and bikes
I usually call in at a pub at the end of a ride and often half way. I'm a beer drinker and enjoy a good pint!
Also call in a pub during a dog walk.
Friday nights are The Five o'Clock Club down at The Rising Sun .............. but that's a walk there and back without the bike and without the dog.

Some of my roots are in Bolton-upon-Dearne. One of my great-grandfathers was a miner there in the 19C.tykeboy2003 wrote: ↑23 Aug 2022, 2:29pm Interesting that my thread has been hijacked by people talking about pubs in and around Barnsley, my hometown! I was in Ingbirchworth earlier this year. I was told the Fountain was overpriced and unfriendly, and directed to the George in Upper Denby (which does a nice pie and peas and is friendly).thirdcrank wrote: ↑6 Aug 2022, 12:55pm I'm drifting away from the thread title. In the days when I was exploring the West Yorkshire Cycle Route I rode past the George may times but I've never been in. These days we are always looking for somewhere nice for lunch, but they don't seem to open for weekday lunch - so I'll leave it to anybody pursuing the thread title

My dad worked down the pit, Highgate and before that at Hickleton (we lived in Thurnscoe till I was 4 in 1960). We lived on the Ringway estate near the cemetery.thirdcrank wrote: ↑23 Aug 2022, 3:27pmSome of my roots are in Bolton-upon-Dearne. Re: Friday night beer and bikes
Last Friday, rode a 30 km loop ending up at the wonderful Compasses at Littley Green. Owned by the son of Nicholas Ridley who sold out the Ridley brewery and pubs to Greene King 30 odd years ago. He's turned it into a great locals pub, but also has accommodation for touring cyclists.
Back to Friday. It was the first evening of a beer and music event with a lean towards cycling, with rides events, etc, called 'Beers and Gears'. Anyone arriving by bike got a free half. I arrived twice (Sunday as well, 60 Kms this time).
