Other than one small issue in Taunton at morning rush hour, I don't recall any problems at all with any road traffic. Quite the contrary, we experienced polite and respectful drivers. I can only remember one poor road surface (the Peebles-Penicuik road)
If you can be bothered, you might provide more details of your route because it sounds like one that others might consider doing.
Here are the routefiles we actually did. I think the ones quoted upthread were WIP. We stopped off at home in Glossop so D5 and D6 aren't useful (unless you particularly want to visit Glossop of course)

Ah, I did wonder about the Glossop meander. I thought perhaps it could be a way of sidestepping the Warrington area, but your explanation clears that one up.

Did you do this ride? What route did you settle on?

I am thinking of cycling LEJOG in September 2023 in a team of four. I looked at several routes and have combined GPX files to create my own route in Outdooractive. I have then turned this into a 3D Visualisation YouTube of the whole route - the Scottish section looks especially fantastic, see.. https://youtu.be/0rskssQWsBw Hope you enjoy

what's the best way to effectively use GPX files? Create a file for each individual stage or have a relatively large file that has the entire route?

I would have a file for each day otherwise I’d get sick of my computer telling me every morning I’m x mls from the start and would I like directions to the start.

For multi-day tours when I have the route in advance I have one file per day, or sometimes two. Then I edit each file so that it has a helpful display title, and choose those so that they appear in the correct order on the satnav. (On my Garmin this title is not the filename.)

As above = a file for each days route.
I'm not so sure if you would have too many way points for the whole route to fit in a satnav ?
A man can't have everything.
- Where would he put it all.?.

ok thanks to you both. I've always done this method but just wanted to check if there was any benefit in having the route all on one file. I also think it would take ages to load it up each day thinking about it. And yes may struggle to fit it into my (slightly ageing) Garmin Edge 520.

In addition to putting the daily routes on my Garmin I also load them into OSMAnd on my phone (other similar apps are available). This is both a backup in case the Garmin has a tantrum but is most useful for exploring detail around the route.
Usually riding a Spa Cycles Aubisque or a Rohloff-equipped Spa Cycles Elan Ti

Smart thinking! A few years back I got as far as Cullompton when, in a state of exhaustion, in turning my Garmin off I managed to do a factory reset and lost all my routes; and turned it in to a Romanian speaking thing.

The following morning I tried using my smart phone, where I'd saved the routes. Yea! it worked really well, even giving me spoken instructions. I kept the phone charged with a power back, and sailed through the next 10 days.
