E-cargo bike wanted

Post by Philip Benstead »

E-cargo bike wanted

I have a friend who is seeking an Ecargo bike but is having difficulty finding a suitable one.

They are prepared to buy new or preowned., price is not much of a consideration.

They wish to carry two small dogs in it, so a box on it or can be fitted is a requirement.

It must be good quality and reliable for example BOSH motor.
They would prefer non-suspension if possible.
They have motor transport, but they are based in central London and Canterbury Kent. Traveling may be unavoidable

These ones are considered suitable.

The trouble is that no one has any stock so second-hand is acceptable

Can anybody offer help and advice?

I can't offer much help other than to suggest that maybe post the same question on the pedelecs.co.uk website where e-cargo bikes and their riders are not uncommon.
Without my stoker, every trip would only be half a journey

It seems to be down at the moment. Try again later and I'm sure it'll be fine. Always rather slow, especially compared to this lightening fast site. I certainly agree with bikes4two that it will he worth the visit.

I'd have a look at a Tern with the appropriate length rear deck.

e cargo bikes come in generally two guises, ones with a longer flat rack with aboard for securing stuff too or ones with a long nose with a box /compartment on the front. The front box/compartment design allows the ride to keep an eye on little people or pets.
The decision is first to decide on which type of bike is needed, for piece of mind a front cargo carrying bike is probably the better solution but they tend to be long some 2.1 m or so.
This brings another issue storage and somewhere safe to keep the bike and in the dry, not a damp shed for winter.

Mid drive bikes then one will really need to but new with the added warranty which only has two years for the electrical parts otherwise repair with no warranty is expensive. A used propriatary bike wolud likely be out of warrant yor one with little warranty remaining.

My cargo bike use is utilitarian so a long tail with 80 odd ltr panniers and large flat deck, also combined with a trailer for towing up to 200lbs.

Reliability isn't just about buying Bosh as a China hub motor will prove to be equally as reliable as a Bosh, one only has to go on the German forum to see them poo poo bosh and other propriatary bikes. Bosh, yamaha or any other mid drive bike have their reliabilty issues jsu a lot of follks don't mention it out of embarrassment after poo pooing hub bikes which they and dealers say are inferior but have no knowledge of them.

Probably cheaper all round to convert a second hand cargo with a Bafang mid drive motor. Much more choice and you can specify a motor that is up to the job.
I'd reduce the speed limit though: some cargo bike s look like they'd be terrifying to ride beyond 10mph!!
