The insistence that this sh!tshow has nothing to do with last Friday reminds me of Trump's inauguration, and the 'Alternative Facts'. The interviewee on the Today prog this morning denied Tory policy has any relevance until Justin Webb forced his arm up his back, then said "nobody would deny it", then said the crash was caused by the fuel subsidy not unfunded tax cuts. They're repeatedly shifting the conversation away from tax cuts and onto fuel subsidy every time they're challenged.

In case anyone isn’t stressed and depressed enough already, can I gently point out that this bunch of ideologically-driven incompetents is in charge not only of our economy, but our defence, at just the moment when the danger of us all being wiped-out due to poor judgement is greater than it has ever been.

Interesting from the New Statesman
https://www.newstatesman.com/business/2022/10/cost-liz-truss-energy-plan-price-cap wrote:n October 2008, a financial analyst at JP Morgan wrote a piece in the New Statesman titled: “And still the Chancellor borrows”. In it, he bemoaned the “madness” of an increasingly unpopular party trying to keep itself in government by kicking aside “fiscal responsibility” by dramatically increasing government borrowing, only to hand it to an amoral industry. “We are happy to believe in markets in the good times. When times are bad, we run to the state,” he wrote.

The writer was of course Kwasi Kwarteng, who is himself now Chancellor and is doing exactly the same thing in the same position.

First we had No Vacc Djokovic the tennis player, and now we have Mistrust as our prime minister with a Quasi chancellor.

I think it was distinctly higher when various American President had their finger on the button, I don't think Biden is a full shilling, but I trust they haven't given the launch keys to someone who can't work a suit jacket

I can partly see where that criticism is coming from. At the same time, i suspect those who contributed to the conservatives rating probably 'priced in' a number of unsaid but evident desires of the current Tory leadership. They're not to the economic right of the us republicans right now, but if you look at a lot of what truss/kwarteng and co have said in the past, such their Britannia unchained book, along with the economic views of the think tanks and their suspected funders that they're basically implementing the policies of then being placed right of the us republicans isn't quite so outlandish and reflects their desired destination.

Noteworthy that the suspected funders of the iea etc also are involved with the right wing of the Republicans

The other figure was perhaps more interesting showing where the uk voters for different parties lie on that same scale.

Yes.

IIRC Burn-Murdoch said that he wanted a second bite at that one. I'm not sure if that's been done yet.

The vast majority of voters (75%) said they thought the government has lost control of the economic situation, while only 18% think the government is in control. Even 71% of 2019 Conservative voters think the government has lost control. It comes with voters disapproving of the mini-budget, with 61% regarding it as a bad budget. Only 12% think it was a good budget, with 56% of 2019 Conservative voters regarding it as bad.

Couple of scoops from the times earlier:

"Kwasi Kwarteng attended a private champagne reception hours after delivering his mini-budget where hedge fund managers who would gain from a crash in the pound egged him on to commit to his plans."
