The 23-mile eBike commute to Southampton is more manageable now the days are getting longer. I can reliably cycle it in around 1 hr 45 mins (each way) at an average of 13mph. This is with 2 small panniers, one containing the laptop. The eBike is standard with a 250W rear hub motor. I do most of the ride with it set to 200 Watts max. Assistance fades away at around 15 mph so my pedalling effort is to push it beyond that when on the flat, or to keep it above 8 mph when going uphill. The motor become less efficient at low speeds and will tend to overheat (but no problems yet) so I work hard on the hills to keep the speed up.

I got to the office this morning, switched off the power at the display unit and went to push my Wisper 705se to the secure bike shed, and there was noticeably increased drag and the feel of cogs turning as I pushed the bike. And now on its centre stand, rear wheel off the ground, when I use the walk assist throttle the wheel spins ok but once I close the throttle the wheel quickly halts with a bit of a graunchy sound that wasn't there before. Could this be a problem with the nylon planetary gears in the hub.? The bike is less than 2 years old so I could take it back to the dealer to be looked at under warranty, although the dealer I bought it from is about 70 miles away.

Fixed. I whacked the wheel with a rubber mallet. Freed the clutch inside the hub..

The sprag clutch in the motor kept on sticking so I took the bike to Wisper HQ in Sevenoaks and they fitted a new motor under the 2 year warranty. Both the dealer and Wisper were surprised to hear of the problem, so it can't be too common.

Now Sold. Good bike. It wasn't getting much use and I was finding the weight a bit awkward with the rack battery when also loaded up with panniers. But my balance is subnormal.

I should add that the BB whilst not high by MTB standards was higher than I wanted, and the 7-speed freewheel was a limitation. I mention these because I am considering converting my Cannondale Adventure which does not have these drawbacks.
