2023 touring plans

Post by MrsHJ »

I’ve been back 36 hours and I’m planning my next tour…..I think I’ve got to an age where I’m conscious that I will eventually run out of time to go to all those places I want to cycle through.

The Via de la plata remains on the planning board but I would like to do that with a friend (one of my cycling pals sounds like a possible, we will see). It’s got a bit too much climbing for my current fitness levels and weight so we’ll see how that goes over the winter.

Might just do a Pyrenees to home tour, there are many other options, we will see.

Is everyone else starting to make plans for next year as the nights draw in?

I'm thinking maybe southern Norway, taking advantage of the new ferry from the Netherlands (which would make it possible to do a no-fly trip, with a bit of train assistance). But there are still quite a lot of Alps I haven't covered. And I want to ride the old road across northern greece before it completely collapses, too (at the moment it's impassible to cars but still ok on a bike -- but time must be running out). Too many options, not enough holiday time!

Finally got my hernia fixed which put a kibosh on touring plans this year. I don’t think I’ll get the holiday to do LEJoG next year so something small like lon las cymru and probably the Devon coast to coast with my daughter again.

I too have just returned from a tour and am already planning a tour.
Train to Fishguard. -- Carmarthen -- along the Brecon cycle way
To Abergavenny
Hereford to Ludlow
Over Wenlock Edge
back of the Long Mynd
Chirk
Oswestry --over the canal viaduct which I can't spell
Llangollen
Along the Dee valley to Carrog
And end in Prestatyn

A lot of what I don't know with some familiar places. Roll on April

Lots of good plans from everyone. What’s the old road across northern Greece?

Plans are afoot - yes!

Having a week in a cottage in Wales next summer, then we’ll cycle home to Devon, and daughter can bring the car back.

Also Easter tour, probably Brittany. Thinking the pink coast but can’t decide on whether we should go along coast from Roscoff then return inland or bas ourselves somewhere central on the coast and do day trips. Part of the puzzle is weather and whether campsites are open at that time of year…

Planning is at least of the fun, depending on the hills on the route.

I’d really like undertake a ride around Taiwan, which I planned back in 2018ish but for various personal and pandemic reasons didn’t get around to. The re-ignition of tension between China and Taiwan has made me consider that in future this might not always be an option.

However I’m also due a long trip to see a friend who moved internationally, which’ll eat into holiday allowance, so I’ll probably just look at my IGN cycle map of France and look for a route I’ve not ridden yet.

I loved Taiwan, go for it. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I'm planning a trip to Thailand (2 months) in late Autumn early winter and then something similar, maybe a bit of Vietnam and Cambodia in the New Year. Shut up house and switch off power, also I suffer medically in the cold, so ease the burden on me (or is that ease it on the NHS).

It's the road over the Katara pass (which would form part of a route from Meteora, or thereabouts, to Ioannina): it used to be the main road across this part of Greece, but has now been supplanted by the Odos Egnatia motorway. There's a good account of a trip in this journal: https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/greece3/metsovo/

Definite plans for 2023, but problem is time and money :(

Realistic options maybe include 2 or 3 from 5 below:

- Tour of North Rhine-Westphalia
- C2C
- Italy : EV7/EV5
- Cantii Way
- 4 or 5 days in France - section going through Massif Central or Pyrenees or even L'avenue Verte.

I'm not sure what next year has planned for me. Usually, my dad and I meet up for tours but he had a bad accident at the beginning of this year's tour to Anglesey which has forced him to give up bike touring.
I'm a scaredy cat about touring on my own hence next year's uncertainty.
