Camping prices in France

I have just been on a 3-week tour in France, riding from North (Dieppe) to the Med and then train back from Toulouse. I have been amazed by the difference in what I've been charged for camping with my bike and tent. The usual price was around 10 euro, but the cheapest was only 3.56€ and the most expensive over 30€ (even though not high season). Neither of these had a swimming pool; the latter was however on the coast and had a beach. It was also the busiest by far. Next time, I won't go to the seaside (I prefer river swimming anyway!)

I've often found that there's generally very little correlation between cost and facilities, and sometimes even cost and location. I've paid 5eur for a clean, modern site with loo roll provided, and 20eur for a pitch on a mosquito-infested swamp complete with dirty sanitaires and a grumpy owner. The unpredictability is now part of the attraction for me
