servicing a generic Chinese hub motor

Post by simonineaston »

The front hub motor fitted to my nano conversion / Brompton has been noisy for months. After viewing sundry YT videos, I can see that the source of the rattle is probably the nylon gears that make up the clutch. Perhaps it just needs some silicon grease? I've scoured the internet for a parts list or service manual but no joy - does anyone have such a thing? Or else has experience of dismantling one of these.
the etched text round the hub says: EN15194 250W 36V 290ORP OUTRIDER QRT BRUSHLESS MOTOR QDEL 0058

I should add that I've got as far as removing the wheel from the cycle (obs), removing the pair of lock nuts (one of which is visible in the piccie), removing the 6 Torx screws and gently tapping the axle, on either side.. No movement was discernable... there are few other options that I can see.

Can I see a pic of the other hub face.

Hubs have two options for opening,; either is has six machine screws on the periphery of the hub or it has a fine screw thread joint which is prctially invisible. The screw joint is at the tapered edge of the side plate where it meets the hub flange.

The six machine screws one can see in the pic are to hold the clutch in place.

For hubs that are screwed together one needs a special tool or make one out of metal.
Something like this.

The one above is for a hub with a tri arrangement of clutch screws, one affixes the tol to the hub cover via the clutch fixings and uses leverage to open a/c/w.

For my hubs with the screw jioint I mad emy own out of a bit of flat ali.

Any rattle/play in the nylon gears will inavariably mean new gears or complet clutch mechanism, with any hub it is also prudent to check any sealed bearing play in the end plate or lhs shell case also the larger central one behind the clutch.

Yes but on the other face, the joint is pretty much invisible until one gets to move the face plate a/c/w.
