Bottom bracket Edinburgh bicylces revolution cross

Post by tinribs »

Hi all, a mate in Italy is looking for a replacement bottom bracket for his Edinburgh bike coop revolution cross. It's maybe an 08 model, he's not sure what sort of bracket he needs though (and neither am I!). Would anyone be able to advise?

Search comes up with a Chin Haur 52 square taper bottom bracket. This comes in several different widths to suit your frame and transmission. So could be 68 or 73 mm shell width and an axle length to suit your crankset. A Shimano or any sealed square taper unit should fit if it's the same width. Time to measure the bottom bracket width and the axle length.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

A photo would help the most. And if he can remove a crank bolt and so the end of the bb spindle can be seen that would help too. And yes the width of the bb shell needs measuring to tell if it's 68 or 73mm. I would expect it to be 68.

If providing a photo of the RH end of the axle (the important end) - assuming the crank can be taken off, do so with a ruler/tape measure to show the length of protruding (from the frame's BB shell axle. Someone can then measure/compare to a known length BB unit to give a good idea of the axle length.
In all probability, the frame bottom bracket shell width will be 68mm.
Loads of makers selling square taper BB units, some better than others, none as good as the discontinued Shimano UN 55 units.

If he can bear it to be off the road for a while (hours if local bike shops good, days if it's ordered for delivery), take the BB out and read the markings. Then note it for next time.

Otherwise, remove cranks, use calipers to measure the shell and spindle widths, then put cranks back on.
