Where can I find these wheels?

Post by Stradageek »

Hi Guys

Having trouble locating a set of ETRTO 559 road wheels with a 15/16C Inner rim width and a 9-speed freehub, OLD 100mm front, 135mm rear.

They are to replace the ETRTO 571 14C wheels on my Bacchetta and allow me to run 28mm road tyres. At ETRTO 571 the only fast road tyres available are 23mm and the harsh ride and lack of grip in the wet are finally getting to me.

Can anyone point me to a likely source of narrow MTB wheels?

The necessary long reach calipers will be the next purchase :D

Can you confirm you are talking about conventional high-pressure tyres not tubeless?
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

If it were me, I'd be buying the rims and the hubs, measuring properly, then buying the spokes.
Wheelbuilding isn't a black art. Use your upturned frame as a wheel-jig.

The hard part - for me anyway - is getting the spoke pattern correct.
This video is a good simple one to follow. I've used it for 32h and 28h as the method is the same.

As MIck says ^^, you're unlikely to find anything pre-built, 26" is not far off as obsolete as 650c! Especially 26" rim brake with a 9sp hub...

Something like this would work though:
https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/bicyc ... spokes-14/

and then a cheap set of Shimano hubs, eg:
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shi ... prod155153 (says 10sp but it'll work with 9sp with a spacer).
Or you could go one level lower and get Sora for about £30 which is already 9sp.

Just make sure you get the same number of spoke holes for hub and rim!

And then take them to a friendly local bike shop and get them to build them up (or do it yourself if you feel you can).
The size difference is about an extra 6mm of drop in the brakes. Do double check the tyre clearances when you fit a bigger / wider tyre. The slightly smaller rim size should mean it fits OK but some 650c frames, being designed for racing and triathlon, have paper thin clearances between frame and tyre.

Smallest 26" tyre you're likely to be able to buy (easily...) is about 1.3" so I'd be checking that will fit before buying new rims and hubs!

Narrow 26" rims have always been a scarcity, more so now and even more so if you also need a rim brake surface.
The go to used to be Sun CR18's, with a 17mm internal, it's what Thorn promoted for their faster 26" builds. Seems like they're still made, but you might not find UK stock. Looks like they're available via AliExpress

Thanks guys, I'll look into suitable rims. The hubs I have are in excellent nick and building a new wheel is not a problem, I even have a spoke roller :D

And yes I need high pressure, non-tubeless rims.

The search continues :?

Mach 1 MX rims are 17c I think:

If you've got the space in the frame, it might be more 'future proof' to go to 650B / 27.5" ie 584.

Good call that one, unfortunately there's clearance on the front but not on the rear :(

I'll follow this one up as it does seem odd that there are at least 5 manufacturers of 28mm 559 tyres but almost no one making <17mm ID rims, are they all running them on 19mm rims and would that work?

I've run 32mm tyres on 20mm rims but don't think I'd want to go with 28mm tyres on 19mm rims. I have run 28mm tyres on 17c rims though. Mavic used to do quite a few 17-559 rims (Cross-Ride, XC717) as did Ryde/Rigida. Used probably available.

I would have thought ypu would find a few. Width aside you are after bog standard 26"mountain bike wheels, albeit out of date except for cheap bikes. I have several old wheels of that sort of size or less. Try a bike recycler or older shop.
Why so narrow though?
Modern feeling is that wide (within reason) is good.
28mm tyres are fine, indeed common, on 20mm rims. I use 25mm on them. Much better handling.

I have 19mm 559's and some 28mm 26" tyres, I'll give it a go to see how they look at least

Hi,

Spa have Exal LX17, in silver and black, 32 & 36 holes, according to their website. They can also build you a wheel if required.
Best wishes,
Luke

I happily ran some 1" x 26" tyres (so 25mm) on 20+mm rims for several years onmy commuter. Still got them somewhere. Might dig them out.
Methinks you are over thinking this. And ignore any tyre makers charts. They will have excessive safety as a priority.
