"I hadn't ridden a bike since I was about 10 years old! Buying a bike was a great decision although I had been toying with the idea for some 10 years. I'm afraid some of the youthful car speed merchants put me off for a mighty long time."

Yes Yes good point. On my housing estate I am the only one to ride a bike daily ( or at all).People know the benefits however it is to easy to be clipped by accident by a passing speeding car or child or very elderly person opening a car door.Which is why some people buy gravel bikes etc and avoid road.If you have a family some play safe.

From my perspective, I gave it up for a couple of months and if I’m honest didn’t notice any improvements in my health or mental well being. Xmas came around so started again.

Now back where I was with regular but not excessive drinking at home and the occasional blow out with friends.

Recently put a highlights reel on my phone and was quite taken aback how nearly every good time picture involved me with a drink in my hand. Not sure if i want to give up completely but definitely want to get more mindful of my drinking
I've not had a drink for some 15 to 20 years... before then I was drinking absinthe, pernod or cider. I can't honestly say I miss it... certainly I don't miss losing parts of my weekend recovering from the night before. But the effects of not drinking weren't immediate and certainly for me took several years to be felt.

Personally speaking I've found myself getting more aware of things and more interested in everything.. I feel there's a greater clarity to my thoughts and even an increased appreciation of the world around me..

I still visit bars for food, but am more than happy to have either half a pint of milk, a pot of tea or a ginger beer.

I think the problem for some people is that their social interactions are centred around drinking, and giving up threatens their much valued drinking community. Sober and lonely is the fate they worry about.

I recognise the truth in that. Extra effort is required to find new friends who aren’t so centred on alcohol which is a challenge most folk find extremely hard - I know I am finding it so. But they are out there :-)
