Anyone got any practical info on cycle touring in Tasmania. We (2 ageing females) are going for a month in February 09. Should I take a mountain bike or would a standard tourer with wideish tyres be OK - where to stay - hostels etc.
Any advice appreciated.

Touring bike in Tasmania should be fine..You can get a ferry there from Melbourne..The best thing you can do is go to Crazyguyonabike andtype in Tasmania ..There you will see a few blogs about touring in Tasmania and you will get an idea of what you can do..
Also if you post this message on Bicycles.net.au you will get locals answering your questions...

I rode from Hobart to Port Arthur (60 miles each way, or so) in 1988 and stayed at the YHA there with cafe next door.
Nice place with good roads. Did it on my Mercian with Mavic MA40s and 25mm tyres as I remember. No problems whatsoever, but I ain't no expert on Taz!
I was in the RN at the time, and we were due to be in Taz for a week, I planned to take leave and get up to Launceston, but the visit got cut down only a short weekend, sadly.
So can't help much at all.
