Dog dazers work by emitting a load sound that is too high for most people to hear at just over 20Khz. However don't assume nobody can hear it. I was checking one out (work issue) at home when our youngest daughter (late teens) who was engrossed completely in something suddenly said in a startled voice "Ooh. What are you doing Dad?". Essentially they work by sending a loud sound, probably blocking all other sounds, which confuses dogs.
