An interesting country to cycle in, but rather expensive, plus a dear air fare.

It's cheaper than much of Europe. Lots of good business hotels. Food reasonable as well if you avoid expensive restaurants. Plenty of 7 11s and clones for coffee and snacks.

I've toured there a lot and love the place. Can't wait to go back next year - autumn is best time.

Yes, airfares are expensive.

Sorry ,I was relying on comments from my neighbours, who have some insight.. How about the dear air fare and Co2 emissions?

Japan is not expensive especially now with the yen so weak. It's the only place I know where you can get a full take-away cooked meal at a supermarket (bento) for 200-300 yen (half price from around 7:30PM). It's also the only place I know where you don't need to lock up your bike. It has more than its share of ugliness, but a carefully planned trip (and never doing the awful northern tip of Hokkaido to southern tip of Kyushu) can take you to place that seem like a dream.

Here's something I wrote after my first tour in 2014. Can't believe it was 8 years ago. Have made 3 further tours from Hokkaido to Okinawa - but not the dreaded end to end.

There are some things I would change in the write up, but you can get the general idea. Can't remember if it's in there, but there are some great ferries, all bike friendly. You can even pop over to Korea.

They are mustachio handlebars. My wife could not brake from the hoods with drop bars and was afraid to go into the the drop position. These handlebars are the only ones that do not require a change of the brake system, so nothing else was changed and the only cost was the new bars.

This type of thing?

Great idea -- means not having to change to separate brakes and gear levers.

Can you strap camping gear across them ? I found that I could fit my tent across the tops of my drop bars, the hoods forming a retainer keeping the tent from rolling forwards. Also made possible by the fact cables were routed down and away from the bar.

Not sure about strapping gear on them. We have enough space in two rear panniers even for winter tours.
