Hello, I can't find any topic or post like this.
So...can I run SRAM Flat-Top 12-speed chain on Shimano 11-speed groupset?
I have a bike with Shimano R8020 groupset.
Apparently not. The Flattop chain has larger-than-standard rollers so it won't fit on chainrings designed for standard chains. It won't even work with Shimano 12-speed, let alone 11.
As AndyK says: no it won't work, the rollers are slightly larger (0.1mm if I remember correctly).
It's highly unlikely to run correctly on the cassette sprockets, I have however run them without any trouble on some standard 11 speed chainrings, that depends on manufacturing tolerances and previous wear though, you won't always get away with it.
There are quite a few after-market non SRAM flat-top chain specific chainrings and jockey wheels available now too, so the Velo news article is a little out of date.
Cassettes though: SRAM 12 only I think so far.
According to Leonard Zinn, who manages the tech Q&A section of Velonews, This won't work. He says, in answer to a question from a reader: "I know a Flattop chain will skip on any cassette other than AXS, because the big rollers won’t drop into the valleys (this I have experienced)."
