Klein Quantum 2000 Groupset upgrade
Hi all,
First post in here but need some advice from some experts. I have a wonderful Klein Quantum frame with original everything which I love but unfortunately the 105 5500s the bike came with are starting the wear down. I have bought a new group set r7000s and intend to take it into my local bikeshop to fit the upgrade. However, after doing a bit of research. I have seen some issues with compatibility bit this is vary varied. My question to you is. Would it be possible, without any huge complications to replace the current 5500 Groupset with the newer r7000 Groupset. I am desperate to keep the frame but the mechanics are now letting me down. Please help!
Any input would be valuable as I am a bit of a novice when it comes to bike parts.
Cheers

You need a rear wheel with an 11 speed freehub, otherwise the R7000 cassette will not fit. Unless it’s an 11-34 (edited this from 11-32 after correction below) and your current freehub is 9-10 speed. That combo does work.
Assuming the brake drop on the new and old brakes is similar then I think you should be ok with everything else, but there may be stuff I’m forgetting!

I would think so subject to the above. There are ways around the need to put an 11 speed cassette on a 10 speed hub. One is to have the back of the cassette machined. 1.86mm off. The alternative is to take this off the stops on the free hub. Thats easier. A file will do an alloy freehub and a angl;e grinder or Dremel a steel one. Personally I would save the money that a shop will cahrge you and do it yourself. It not rocket science, barely more that paper plane science.

The GS medium cage rear derailleur and the SS short cage rear derailleur have different largest sprocket and total teeth capacities. Which one did you buy, and which chainset and cassette did you buy?

It is the 11-34 cassette which will fit on an 8/9/10 speed freehub.

Easier to just buy new wheels - you say the bike has "original everything" which I'm assuming means wheels as well.
If they're 22 years old, chances are they're not in tip top condition so just fit some nice new ones that will definitely take 11sp. Chain Reaction have some good Black Friday deals on at the moment.
Starting to machine down cogs is a quick way to voiding warranty.
Everything else should fit fine although obviously the new shifters will have full cable routing under the bar tape rather than the old style "out the side" cable.

That sounds like the Octalink bottom bracket version, so you'll be looking at a Hollowtech replacement. My Klein Quantum has a proprietary square taper press fit bottom bracket, so I'm limited by that to fairly old upgrades. It's currently running Dura Ace 10 speed with a nice older Corima carbon square taper cranks. I've been tempted to upgrade
The all aluminium forks to a super light 330gr pair of full carbon, but it would probably spoil the look of the bike!

Thankyou all for your replies. So, from the sound of it then I will need a new rear wheel. I can give you some details of the Groupset and that will narrow down some of your helpful advice.
Chainset is 50/34T
Rear derailleur is short cage as the cassette is 11/30T. This is good for me because I'm more of a flat distance rider rather than hilly climbs.
It quoted on the website is purchased from that it would be compatible with Shimano 9-11 speed freehub. Would that be right?
Cheers

It means that with your 11-32 cassette and the short cage rear mech you need a 9-11 speed *compatible* freehub body, such as your R7000 groupset’s 11-speed freehub body, that also happens to accept 9 and 10 speed cassettes with the included spacer.TheWolfstinger wrote: ↑28 Nov 2022, 8:05pm … It quoted on the website is purchased from that it would be compatible with Shimano 9-11 speed freehub. (I have an R7000 wheelset and a 6800 for my 10-speed bikes, but I don’t have any 11-speed bikes.)
