Pertex... A couple of decades ago I had a supposedly waterproof jacket made of pertex – it was just about showerproof but nice to wear. The fabric seems to have gone out of fashion now after having been all the rage way back in the '90s.
Pertex was originally a fabric but became a brand with various different flavours. First dreamed up by Hamish Hamilton (the man who designed the classic Force 10 and Buffalo Mountain Shirt) and developed by Perseverance Mills (hence "Pertex") the brand is now owned by a Japanse group, https://pertex.com/ is the brand website.
And he still found time to publish all those books!

So production of perfluorinated chemicals is being banned, to some extent and in some way. This means Shakedry must cease. But then Gore-Tex say ePTFE is not a PFC of environmental concern. So are they anticipating that restrictions will tighten further in a year or two or are there other factors behind this? Perhaps a combination of things.

Until Castelli produced their Gabba/Perfetto, I wore one very regularly in winter on the bikes and still always take one into the hills. On the bikes, I still take an additional layer in winter but it's Shakedry which is another kettle of fish altogether being almost as light as Pertex but properly waterproof and still breathable.

Back in the day I had one of those original buffalo mountain tops. It lasted several years but eventually it split into 2 whilst pulling it over my head. I replaced it with a ripstop version until an off resulted in the a&e staff taking a pair of scissors to remove it. :(
You could add a good degree of waterproofness using TX10.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

Buffalos have a DWR coating as standard, and it does need topping up occasionally. The trick is follow the destructions and just use the spray-on on to the Pertex outer. If you use the wash-in that'll make the pile water repellent which will inhibit its wicking ability which is somewhat at odds with how it's meant to work (see https://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/advice/care/)

I have Special 6 and Teclite shirts that are my Weapons of Choice for MTB in cool to cold and it has to be pretty serious rain to want a waterproof too. Good kit!

Pertex is also very vulnerable to UV hence the splitting. I've had a number of Pertex windproof tops that have ended their days duct taped together as they typically split accrosds the shoulders when putting them on.
