To be honest I'd just say you were a bit unlucky. In my opinion the chain must of had a fault. For it to snap and everything else to be ok after such short mileage suggests a problem. Do I clean the chain monthly? No. Oil it every week or two though, and do try to give it a wipe if I've been out in the rain though I don't always.
£20 two cocktails, or a couple of days on the tube. Sounds actually good that it snapped before it wrecked everything else.
Your cleaning and lubing regine sounds better than most.
Keep an eye on it and change it before it wears. I think you were unlucky though..
