Steerer extender max length

I have a Thorn Sherpa MK2 (I think) which I.ve had for many years and really like. I assembled the bike myself and cut the steerer tube to the length I needed at the time, in the folly of early middle age I assumed it would never change. I currently have around 55 mm of spacers below the stem. Over time my neck has become increasingly stiff and I now want to raise the bars to get an upright position. The forks on the bike are reynolds 531 with a steel steering tube. Des anyone know what length steerer extending, such as the ergotech ahead stem raiser. this gives up to 80mm of extra rise but would this place excess stress on the steerer when using the bike with luggage, especially a bar bag. I use Cinelli double trouble bars if that would make a difference.

So you want to add an extra 80 mm to the existing 55 mm?
As long as you don't want to sprint with the loaded bike it should not be a problem IMO.
Thought about an adjustable stem uprising? Seems a bit more solid than the riser...

I think you will find that if you check the listings for the various stem raisers of that type on SJS's website, there is no mention of a limitation on the amount of exposed steerer. I have the Satori version, and the instructioms that came with it made no mention of any such limitation (and it looks like the Ergotech one is simply a re-badged Satori one).

..welcome to my world... most of my frames are 2nd hand but like you the steerer has been cut too short for me (my current handlebar set up is 2 inches above saddle height)..

In the past I've got around the issue by using a 90 angle stem of 120mm length from spa cycles, however there are other ways of solving this issue

- Argos cycles in Bristol look to be offering a service of removing your old steer from your forks and welding in nice new longer one, not cheap at around 90 squids but once it's sorted it's sorted

- speak with sjsc about a new set of forks. I understand that they've discontinued the production of the sherpa so it's something you'll need to speak with them about really soon.

- get a nice new set of forks made up - and perhaps consider a front disc brake - that way you can have a steer of any length you want

- look at the other forum posts from Colin531and brucey about lengthing your existing steer tube by adding a bit to the end (it's not that simple, but it's cheap)

- if you are using a stem extender consider using two stems - one to attach the bar bag to the steerer and the other to attach the handlebars to the frame.

There's a couple of members on this forum who use stem extenders and have done some serious mileage on their bikes so I hope they post their experiences

I've used the internal wedge type as in the link above, they're very neat, once fitted it looks no different to a solid steerer.
I'd have no qualms about using either type at it's full height, both have a suitable overlap with the steerer. An Airnimal folder has basically the same thing as an external extender and that's 230mm long!

A Cigne style stem is an option, 145mm tall.
