If you use the Strava app it gives you your total distance and climbing with a big fanfare!!!

Just had a quick look at mine.Nothing exceptional but still working from home full time I have fewer opportunities than some and only one short camping tour. Also I don't record my domestic trips for shopping, dentist and the like.

I generally ride 6 days a week, usually just for the morning, 30-50 miles with the occasional longer ride. I'm pretty slow (and getting slower!), I just like being out on my bike pottering around the countryside.

I usually go out Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, rides are typically @ 100km but can be up to 100 miles or more, i'll be out all day by the time i've stopped at a cafe or two! I'm done with commuting so my riding is for 'leisure' and keeping my head in one piece!
Convention? what's that then?

I was unable to visit my son in NYC last year so decided to ride the 5,000 miles this year.

Managed it by October. On a Thorn Raven with a Rohloff hub.
Hope to visit him next year.
2017 Ethiopia.5 weeks.
2018 Marrakech 2 weeks.
2023 Thailand 8 weeks.
Always on a Thorn Raven/Rohloff hub.

Not as impressive as the majority on here, but i am pleased with the 1 321 miles I've totalled so far for this year for a number of reasons.

Firstly, I was off the bike for three months of this year after a major op which resulted in me being bed bound for a whole week. I do not recommend it.

Secondly, while it's not a huge total, it's still my best since my back injury in 2019.

Thirdly, the total means I cycled more than I drove in 2022... somewhere around 1 200 miles driven. I would get rid of the car if I could but for some reason, my wife doesn't fancy a tandem.

With a bit of luck, I hope to double the total in 2023.

I only started cycling again at the end of April after a 17 year break. I've done about 6400 strava/komoot recorded kilometres since then and maybe another 500km of unrecording 'pottering around the village' cycling.

The aim is to average 200km a week next year, but I can see the warmer month totals being a lot higher than that.

I didn't quite get this - 5000 miles from aberdeen would have got you well past ney york, it would even get you over the mexican border.

My 6500 would have got me into Malaysia

OK - I have been drinking too much, far more than what is prudent - but never the less kuala Lumpa would be some bike ride - wonder if I can make the land of Aus next year,

You should have followed the rhumb line route, a bit sunnier and less hilly.

About 50 miles short of 6,500 miles for the year as of today, thus should hopefully equal your grand total come the end of the year. However, I see it's now just started to snow quite heavily (North of Scotland). Only a shower I think.

I dont like setting yearly totals as targets, because I think its easy to fall into that mindset of obsessing about it, and every ride becomes solely about the distance, and you miss the important stuff about the ride and why you ride in the first place. None of us ride to hit some arbitary number we pluck out of thin air on January 1st, we ride because we enjoy cycling, the mileage comes naturally as part of that process, who cares how big or small that number is, I dont ride to compete with others.

Plus I think when you start to fall behind your weekly or monthly mileage goals, it can quickly become a very negative experience, am I bad cyclist because I cant meet my target goals because Im not riding enough when I dont feel the motivation and all that stuff, which increases the anxiety about it massively if you are forced to stop riding because of injury or illness.

I know a couple of riders who have been forced to miss chunks of riding this last year and their mindset at this point of the year is totally focussed on the very negative aspects that theyve not met their yearly totals as a result, and you just cant break out them out of it, in fact trying to get them to see the positives, just makes them more negative and even angry about it, its all well it gives me motivation to try harder next year, and I just think theyre missing sometimes life has a habit of getting in the way of what we want to do.

but YMMV as they say

I can sometimes be very unmotivated to get out, esp in poor weather - so targets are good for me, I just have to get on with it, and when I get the first few mile in I seldom have regrets about getting on with it. It would be too easy to miss some great days by waiting for the weather to improve,

Why reveal them online to entire strangers who couldn't care less would be a better question - for whatever odd reason it seems to make it more of a commitment. It then has to be done

So for 2023, another 6500 miles with no week under 100 mile unless forced on holiday.

How much more weight do you need to gain to get to 14 stone? That meal sounds like it will help :D
I'm 12 12 now. Summer weight I would be 12 07, on my 12,000 mile year during covid I got down to just under 12. People I knew thought I had been seriously ill with covid or I was dying with cancer - charming - being the correct weight is not a normal look these days.

I'm thouroughlt enjoying fattening up to 14 (i think i once hit 16 when on the wagons)
Didn't make it, only weighed in at 13st 6 this evening, and it wasn't from the lack of effort. I've pouer 5 gallon of beer down my neck this past 10 days, eaten vast amounts of cake and pudding all a wash with double cream...It was fun

But back to business, first day bck on the road tomorrow, 6½ thousand mile to go, thats the distance my swallows (if they nest in my garage they're mine) fly from South Africa to get here, So that is going to be my distance, a pretend journey to South Africa

The bike is all lubed up and ready to roll

I'm 75 and I did exactly 100 rides last year for a grand total of 7500 km. Well, nearly: it's 7558.

It'd be 1 ride so far this year if the §$%&/() neighbours hadn't been letting off fireworks until the wee smalls. I hope they all have hangovers.

In support of your well-made points, here's a Dr Hutch article about the wisdom of avoiding mileage obsession.

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/dr-h ... ld-go-home

"My best entry for ‘shortest ride’ is from a cold February day in 2014, when the plan called for a solo five-hour effort. Faced with something like that, it was necessary to have a second breakfast and another coffee. Also critical to check tyre pressures, at which point I also decided that some new bar tape would help the miles speed by. While I was doing that I moved the brake levers up a little, which meant finding the spirit level. And so on.

By the time I was ready there was about 20 minutes till sunset. I did 15 minutes. Or at least I did if I rounded up from 10".

My own best mileage-shortening tactic is to sit in the cafe having more coffee & cake whilst dooming about the bad weather due any minute now, despite the sunshine.

Cugel, no longer a proper cyclist, obviously.
