Somerset floods A361

Post by rjb »

Just a quick update as they have just closed the A361 the main road from Taunton to Glastonbury.
All 4 sets of flood gates are currently closed on Cutts Road (Athelney), Moor Lane (North Curry to the A361 at West Lyng), The A361 between East Lyng and Burrowbridge, and Langport to Muchelney.
We haven't approached the levels reached in 2014 yet but more rain is expected. :(

stay safe and dry :wink:

News in that the flood gates may have been forced open by motorists wishing to use the road despite warnings of;
(i) flooding
(ii) being stuck in said flood and then having to wait for any emergency services to come and rescue them..

..humans, great in theory...

The environment agency have caved in to local pressure from ignorant drivers who think they know better and who smashed the locks off the gates and re-opened the flood gates on the A361. Dressed up as a successful pumping regime. With the downpour we've received today and it's still bucketing down the road may well be closed again very soon.
Driving through flood waters to save time after ignoring signage invalidates your insurance and puts your life at risk along with your rescuers. Don't do it. :(

A361 was closed overnight and is now likely to remain impassible for at least a week. :(
Check the status of the road closures on the Somerset levels on the link posted above.
Note some minor roads are also flooded but unless temporary barriers are in place may still be passible with care.
