But that would leave the question (and I don't know the answer to this) what would you call a bolt that had a round head ? logic would say 'machine bolt' but googling that term just shows it as a 'hex headed set screw'
More please on what you're describing.

What type of "round head"? Cylindrical, domed, or doesn't it matter?

And only partially threaded?

Thanks

...

Something like this?

"Round head bolt":

If you really need all the answers to this the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers run a three year, part time, diploma course. Identification and application are covered in the first two years, but specification isn't dealt with until the final year, you'll need to complete all three before being qualified to advise and then you'll spend a lot of time telling people the difference is in the intended application.

But couldn't leave as the door was bolted ?

ChatGPT doesn't do any better.

A bolt is a type of fastener characterized by a cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. It is designed to be inserted through a pre-drilled hole and tightened into place with a nut. Bolts typically require the use of a wrench or socket for installation.

A screw is a type of fastener characterized by a helical ridge, known as an external thread, wrapped around a cylinder. It is designed to be inserted into a pre-tapped hole and tightened into place with a screwdriver. Screws do not require the use of a wrench or socket for installation.

Have we just seen ChatGPT's first contribution to the forum?

That is a contribution by ChatGPT but it's not the first, ncutler introduced ChatGPt with this post.

I wonder if we'll reach a point where a Chat GPT reply becomes the automated first answer to a new thread.

I'm fairly relaxed about the apparent - flagrent, even - thread-grabbing by the angelic pin-dancers... but having said that, I will say two things: one, my mudguard is now duly riveted and peened - or peined, if you please. I thank you.
And two, the other issue couldn't be simpler. Bolts shoot through and screws thread into. And that's that.

Yebbut… does that mean that if I buy a screw, and then stick a nut on the end to fix two things together (which I regularly do), it's magically turned into a bolt?
Which end of the pin, btw, are we dancing on?
