That doesn't seem to add a huge amount of benefit (it just puts the full-size image in a "pop-over") while adding one more extension that needs to be maintained.

Could install that extension if there is a big demand for it :)

The benefit is that it does not open a new page. The current behaviour opens a new page and the user must realise this and click on the back button to return to the post. As you will see from posts in the forums, this confuses people because it is not what they expect. Yes, it is a small change but it will improve the usability of the forum by making it behave the way most people are used to from other web sites. If we want riding a bike to be seen as normal, our web site should be normal too.

You don't get "demand" for this sort of thing because almost all the people who just give up in frustration or curse losing the page yet again do not give you any feedback.

I studied human-computer interaction with the Open University some time ago. My comments here are informed by the science and psychology behind computers and people. I have also developed and maintained very complex systems professionally.

I understand the wish to keep software as simple as possible to reduce maintenance effort. So far as I can see the effort to maintain and install extensions is minimal. Please consider this improvement.

OK, I've enabled the Lightbox extension. It seems to work OK.

Extensions are easy to install, until the person maintaining the extension stops doing so... ;)

Image now opens as modal overlay in the same page, Safari macOS.

Anything else that we can play with?

Thanks

I can't see any phpBB extensions that would allow users to change the sizes of images in their posts.

Not in itself a big deal but if you attach number 6 then one of the others drops off. Once bitten etc., but in a perfect world, anybody trying to post no 6 would get an on-screen warning.
Just trying as an experiment.
Looks like I have all six of my uploads.
I tried six, but the system stopped when I reached 5. There wasn't one dropping off, it just didn't respond to attempts to load the sixth.

Thanks admin for this. It is great. The image has a nice clear blue box when I mouse over it in macOS Safari. When I click it opens in an overlay with a big X in the bottom right corner, just as I am used to elsewhere. It helpfully allows you to view all images in the thread by clicking on left and right arrows. It starts at the current image and tells you at the bottom "Image x of y".

What it does not do is allow you to zoom in. For this you have to use your browser to open the image in another tab or window. From here you can zoom in.

Maybe it would be useful to add this information to the forum help? If you would like me to write some draft text, please point me to where it would go and I can propose something that fits.

When I right click on it on my Mac I see this menu, which includes downloading. Does your computer do something different? I would expect Windows and Linux browsers to offer similar options.

Yes. I'm very used to doing that to download the image and just the image.

But was your example using the inline image in the post or the enlarged overlay which pops up after clicking the inline image in the post?

Thanks

My example with the menu was on the overlay that appears after you click on the thumbnail. If you download from the thumbnail you get the thumbnail, not the original uploaded image.

My offer to write instructions stands.
