Being a solo tourer B&Bs and hotels are rarely cost-effective for me, though Airbnbs might be an option occasionally. So I stick to camping - but similarly find that I'm sleeping less well, and the packing up every morning can be wearing, especially if its raining. So I mean to go for trips that involve more fixed-base camping - did a nice one last September from Crewe to Llangollen (Wern Isaf Camping - well recommended) for 4 nights, then back to Crewe via a £20 'luxury' campsite (no name - not recommended!)
However I find changing my mindset really hard - I can't help but look at maps and start planning linear tours!
Seeing as the cost of a really good sleeping mat might be about the same as a couple of nights in a B&B, maybe I should look at them (again...)

Two of us recently cycled the length of NZ and took tents and sleeping stuff . We only used the tents a couple of nights , bit used sleeping bags and liners a few times in basic rooms etc. Didn't mind carrying them too much as the tent, sleeping bag and inflatable mat weighed about 2kg total. We didn't bother with any cooking stuff. It felt handy having the gear as we were in places were accommodation was sparse!
