Shimano Deore XT FH-M756A - 11 speed MTB?

Post by Dynamite_funk »

Can someone possibly confirm that a Shimano Deore XT FH-M756A hub is compatible with an 11 MTB cassette? Hoping to change to a 1x11 drivetrain but before I take the plunge I could do with knowing for sure. I am gettng some mixed messages on various websites. TYIA

Shimano 11 speed road cassettes with a largest sprocket of 32t or less will only fit on an 11 speed freehub. The road cassettes with a 34t largest sprocket will fit on a 10 speed freehub, and require a 1.85mm spacer when fitted on an 11 speed freehub.

Shimano make this clear by giving the 11-34 road cassettes a different series number and listing on their website:

https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/ ... R8000.html

vs.

https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/ ... 00-11.html

The listing for the latter states "It is compatible with both 10 and 11-speed freehubs."

This is because the 11-34 cassettes extend beyond the innermost point of the freehub and might even slightly overhang the spokes. I understand the Shimano MTB cassettes which have even larger sprockets are the same, but I don't know that with absolute certainty, and Shimano do not state on their website for example that the Deore 11 speed cassette is compatible with 10 and 11 speed hubs, like they do for the 11-34 road cassettes:

Yes, the Shimano MTB 11-speed cassettes all fit on the older HG freehubs. I have a couple of 11-40 Shimano cassettes, one Sunrace 11-50, and a couple of ZTTO 11-36 (all 11-speed) on 9- and 10-speed Shimano MTB rear hubs. Conversely, even 11-speed Shimano MTB HG freehubs will not take an 11-speed road cassette (except for the 11-34).
