Is this one of those screw-type nutcrackers, rather than the grip-type, because if it is, she could put it on the bottom of her walking stick, as an add-on to compensate for wear.

Pinching e.g. her thumb would trigger an adrenalin release with concomitant sensory boost inc. improved sense of balance. She'd do better to have a couple of espressi.

Or:

When she finally and ineluctably falls over she can flourish the nutcrackers to flag down a passing simian which, agog with the implied promise of nuts, will provide her with a helpful shoulder to lean on back to her domicile. Should she fail to follow through, though, consequences could be dire (c.f. Edgar Allan Poe, Murders in the Rue Morgue). (And he was nuts.)

I've used nut crackers for lots of things. I don't particularly like nuts.

Nut crackers make good pliers for squeezing things, let alone opening tight screw-on bottle tops, or unscrewing general fittings etc.
Loadsa uses - forget the nuts!

Therefore, there is no specific answer to this riddle. She could be carrying them for all sorts of reasons.

Presumably she puts a pair of gloves on when she goes and her husband looks forward to a period of respite. 😉
